To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 300C. The Russians used a pencil.

Actually thats an old fact .. but true! You can even buy those pens. Pens were used becoz data recording cannot be trusted if written with pencils. But its true the pens were not worth a research!!

the pens costed USD 1 million to development. This amount was donated by the company who designed the pens. And they are nothing more than pressurised ball point pens.
The russkies have their own version and they dont use pencils either. Pinted lead tips (broken) flying around in a space module isnt the worlds safest thing.
