Narendra Modi

Last weekend WSJ had an article on Mr. Modi, the favorite to be Indias next PM. Born in poor family son of street vendor rags to success story. From humanistic POV, IMO the good qualities end right there.

As CM of Gujarat he “opposed setting up relief camps, saying these would be child making factories” when Muslims fled their homes during the Gujarat riots in 2002. That statement alone should disqualify him from public office.

Re: Narendra Modi

In the elections that followed the riots Mr. Modi per this article portrayed the train fire as “part of a wave if Islamist terror and implied that Gujarats Muslims were a threat to Hi dust safety and livelihood”.

Re: Narendra Modi

The irony is that conservatives on the east of the border overwhelmingly support Modi while those on the west side overwhelmingly oppose him.

But the seculars on BOTH sides overwhelmingly oppose him.

Re: Narendra Modi

but he might make the first homosexual PM of india. :smokin:

Re: Narendra Modi

  1. Yes almost 90 % now. Congress has failed. I have been a congressman all my life and I am totally disillusioned with the party. It is tough to be loyal to a family rather than to a party. Corruption has been the worst and the inaction of the government is pretty bad. I would not vote for the BJP but I think BJP will come to a striking distance of forming the government
  2. No he will not (hopefully)
  3. No he will not (hopefully)

Being in opposition, he can blabber all he wants. But once he is in the government things change and sustaining a war is not an easy task. I believe he would be more responsible and work to retain the image he has of a development oriented person.

Re: Narendra Modi

It seems like South Asia is finally rising above the curse of dynasty politics, and looking for alternatives, whether good or bad. But the desire and need for change is certainly visible. I can see why Modi’s attracting such massive crowds all over the country, his record in Gujrat and being a man with a family heir to the throne must be quite a refreshing scenario, but it also says so much about Congress’ monumental level of underachievement. In present day India what makes these elections so interesting is that there’s a whole new generation of traditional Congress voters who will vote for BJP essentially out of protest. The vote for BJP is in many ways vote against Congress, but that’s how thinks normally work in Democracy. I hope the crushing defeat of Rahul Gandhi sends a message or two to Bilawal Bhutto! Having a famous surname and media stamped stamped title of ‘youth icon’ doesn’t get you far in the day and age of information and technology.

Hindutavas hold abhorrent anti Muslim attitudes for Muslims, I cannot confidently say exactly how severe or serving BJP government will be to it’s Muslim population, considering even in the seemingly secular Congress, Muslims by and large were economic underclass. But more than the Muslims, it’s the BJP that has everything to lose by intensifying communanalism.

As with Pakistan, any idiot in the parliament can get away with shooting hyper dramatic, scare mongering, all righteously reactionary crap (just look at PPP), but it’s a totally different ball game when you are in power and constrained by establishment at the back and allies in the Centre, left, and right (something BJP will have to do), there are more chances of Modi becoming another meek and formal Vajpayee than a war mongering kettle on steroids everyone think he will be. Really, starting a war with your nuclear armed neighbour whose entire military might is purposely (and foolishly) designed to combat every form of threat from Eastern borders is not a joke. Bring it one if you think it’s a joke.

I have said it before, and will say it again that anti Pakistani rhetorician leader from India will end up working in in Pakistan’s favour. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind and wake someone up.
