Electron micrographic images of a sculpture of a bull measuring 10 microns long by 7 microns high – approximately the size of a red blood cell – appear in this undated combination photo from the Osaka University laboratory of applied physics professor Satoshi Kawati. The bull, made from synthetic resin with a laser technique called two-photon photo-polymerization, is the smallest model animal ever made, according to an article by Kawata and colleagues in the August 16, 2001 edition of Nature magazine. They said in their paper that the creation of 'micromachines would allow them to be transported to locations inside the human body through even the smallest blood vessels, for example to deliver clinical treatments.
