Most of you might have heard incident of walking for miles (bare footed) by Mughal emperor Akbar to visit Shaikh Saleem Chishti’s dargah for paying homage to the saint on birth of Jehangir. He named the prince Saleem and called him Shaikhoo.
Do you remember any similar incident where people visited dargah / mandir, etc barefooted (nange paon) or ulte paon?
What is the psyche behind this? Is it only for reverence or people want to bear pain for showing affection?
Also, why people name their children like Qalandar Bux, Peer Dino, Ghulam Dastaghir?
whats the psyche behind this? and there are also Mandirs where people go on ghutno ke bal (one shown in Kajol starred Hum aap ke dil main rehte hain)
walking barefooted is way of showing ones respected towards others....
as i remember i even heard that in old days poor laborers used to remove their foot wears when passing by a reach and influential guy of the village...

but I recently read that Sufis are taught to kill their ego by setting and cleaning shoes of visitors at Dargahs, etc and serving the visitors with food and then cleaning the dishes.
Its strange that when these sufis reaches higher positions (after killing ego), visitors are expected to show the same respect as for worldly rulers.

Sufis never asked for that but people did that out of respect

This happens in Gurudwaras as well and this is called 'Seva'. But you dont need to be a saint for this...anyone can do it. The idea is the same - kill your ego and be humble as we are all equal in front of god.

right. My point was that we see two contradictory things on dargahs, etc. On one side people are told to kill their ego by doing seva and like acts and on other sides, they are expected to show extreme reverence for gadi nasheen, etc as if they are some kind of rulers
was malka saba nangay poan when she went to meet hazrat suleman ?
I think she was not barefooted all her way. It was only when she reached Hazrat Suleman's palace and tried to cross the courtyard bare footed considering that courtyard was filled with water (which was infact not)
