Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

Its been more then a few times now that I have come across the following tactic by elders in the family while naming a newborn :

They will take out some alphabet based on the day the baby is born and then with that alphabet they will try to take out a name from the Quran ..

Problem is , I dont understant this concept.. is this the same is doing a ziacha kind of thing ? is this an islamic process?
Please can someone shed some light on this I need urgent advise .

Many thanks ..

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

You can treat it as custom (which is painted as "Islamic custom") but it has nothing to do with religion and its totally non-binding.

Only guidelines that Islam gives about naming that

1) Name should have good meaning
2) Name should reflect the religion

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

names must not mean something that is against Islamic beliefs or values and it must NOT have a negative connotation. using ilm e najoom or any other method to find the unknown is not permissible in Islam.

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

Are you saying that I can't name my child Iblees taken from within the Quran. :@:

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

You should better know that :p

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

The only thing is name should have good meaning and it should not contain any satanic or godly meanings.

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

I think it's just a custom. However, I don't see anything in particular wrong with it.

You know a lot of people want to completely remove culture from their lives which I personally think its a shame as it's how we differentiate from other Muslims etc. Life would be slightly dull without it. My point doesn't really reflect the initial post just something I was thinking.

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

Culture is important but it shouldn't be effecting your religion. New things in religion are not allowed.

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

No this is not a Islamic concept instead it is a biddat

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

Never heard of this trend but as everyone else said, I don't think there is any religious basis for it.

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

this trend used to exist in my dadiyaal a very long time ago......not so much anymore.
now we just find names that:

  1. Have honorable meanings
  2. Identify us as Muslims

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

Jazak Allah everyone for sharing your valuable thoughts on this matter.

Is this considered a Biddat? I understand it may be a cultural thing but those who still practice it , are they practicing Biddah?

It's just as Islamic as picking names from hitchhikers guide.

Yeah it's a biddah, but hey you know this is a biddah that many would defend.

Will this be followed to name your baby? Will grandparents or others have a big say in namin your baby? In our family the couple usually gives the grandparents a list of names they like for both girl and boy and grandparents give preference. Of course name is based on meaning. Some ppl so the rhyming scheme. Some pick names that will pronounce will

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

never heard of it before.

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

just saying, if some sorts of custom exists in anyone's family backhome. Its NOT what goes on in whole of Pakistan.

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

I read about this stuff too .. and my research says that finding alphabets through doing some kind of calculations of the child's date of birth .. is Biddah..

On the other hand, looking for a Quranic word that has been used in a positive context in the Quran is not a biddah.

But it all gets wrong when people do the alphabet thing and then start looking for words out of Quran ignoring the context ...

thanks everyone, i really wanted to know your valuable thoughts since this concept just didnt seem to be right on so many levels ..

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

my inlaws wanted to do this technique , but I have taken a stand against this and inshallah wont let any biddah come in the way of my future generations. Hope all of us educated people will do the same .

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

Names reflect native language/origin/culture not religion.
The names we normally associate with Islam were Arab names. The jews, pagans all had those names.

When Islam spread to persia and central asia, Persian and Turkish names became common among Muslims. Similarly Muslims in East Asia and those in Russia reflect their native language and origin rather than religion.

So there isnt anything as a Muslim name.

Re: Naming a muslim baby and Pakistani trend

^ i disagree .. we have been clearly told that, as muslims, we should keep those names that associate us with the Islam.

For example the name Daaood is a muslim name , David is the english version. Muslims who name their kids David might argue its the name of a prophet. however clearly Arabic being the language of Quran, we know we should prefer Daaood rather then David ..

There clear evidence and proof through Sunnah that muslims should choose islamic associated names rather the biblical terms or any other non Islamic terms..
