Re: names to avoid giving your kids
Can we put Osama on the list? And I have to agree, Bushra is the worst.
Also, I don't like "Ima," especially if last name is Butt. I don't like Myra or Irma, sounds too nerdy. Faqfoor is another bad one. Naeem...what's your name? "Naeem." No, I asked you your name. "Naeem!"
Also, goray really bighar names like Hamza, Musa and Fatima.

Goray to har doosra naam bighaar detay hain. As for the last name being butt, yeah it is true. This one person had a last name Butt back when i used to be in high school and he had some tough times (not too bad though).
Re: names to avoid giving your kids
Its not that bad now. What about Luqman in that case or Salman.
What about arabic names that have christian names too for example
Yousuf - Joseph
Yaqub - Jacob
David - Daud
Younis - Jonas
Adam - Adam
Marium - Mary
Your kid will eventually be called by his/her christian name and with time will lose the muslim/arab pronunciation :nono:
Re: names to avoid giving your kids
I would have to add my name to it too; Aneel/Anil. Not because the west make fun of it (well, I guess "Anal" can be used to get a laugh) but because of its secular nature. Its not islamic and is most commonly found within the population of our neighbors (and its no secret how i feel about them). But it has an aryan background and its a common name amongst the males in Karachi and possibly in the various cities in Frontier.
Re: names to avoid giving your kids
^^ forgot Musa -Moses? and Nooh -Noah. I knew a couple of African colleagues, who every1 called Noah but later I discovered that their actual name was Nooh.
Re: names to avoid giving your kids
Khawer ... they can never pronounce KH sound, plus the "w" sound so it becomes "coward" .....lolz
Re: names to avoid giving your kids
there are many. Those are not the only ones.
This is the thing I don't like even among muslims when they are giving some talks or anything. Where did we get those english names from. Our only source for the names of these prophets is Quran and Sunnah and we should rely on that. So next time you hear some1 giving islamic talk on prophets and you see him using an "english version" of the name, do not hesitate to ask him later on where he got that from. I don't know of any Moses or Jesus or Joseph or something similar. I know of Musa, Isa, Yusuf and others.

I think they do it so that when you speak with the English speakers/goras here or if they are present in the talk, they can understand it better or relate to it. I do understand your point but frankly speaking, hearing those English names made me learn the English version and I could talk to Eng. Spkers later where they could relate too.
Re: names to avoid giving your kids
Its a bit more complicated than that. These names were the same originally but the pronunciations got distorted some way or the other when the names moved from one region to another.
Yousaf for example is Joseph. In languages with slavik roots J is pronounced as Y (yasmine - jasmine).
So at some point in time someone probably spelt Yousuf as Jousuf (pronounced Yousuf) but when the name travelled to europe it probably ended up being pronounced as Joseph (with a J and not a Y).
Re: names to avoid giving your kids
My brother is still called Yousuf. Actually anyone I know with these names is still called by the Arabic version.

Re: names to avoid giving your kids
yeh but fez can work, I mean really anything can be mispronounced but when it becomes a bad word etc then its a whole diff deal
Re: names to avoid giving your kids
^Yah that’s true.
But being associated with a little Moroccan hat or a pathetic character from a sitcom isn’t so great.
And neither is being associated with dehydrated noodles.
