Name change - due to insecurity!!

Some Muslims are feeling insecure here in Sydney, so much so that a friend advertised in the newspaper and removed ‘Mohammed’ from his name.

Is this trend also happening elsewhere?

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

Bara hee darpok insaan nikla tumhara friend. What difference the name change will make ?

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

Its not the fear because Arab gangs are hated throughout Sydney.

But its mostly discrimination. Companies when they see the name Mohammad are going to be less reluctant to hire that person.

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

due to insecurity or due to concerns about security?

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

in New York after 9/11, a friend of mine was name Tariq Akhtar

he changed his name to Tony Adrian and pretended to be an Italian-American

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

Its common in America, most of Muslims have changed or altered their name due to harassment/ discrimination.

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

I never felt threatened or discriminated using my middle name "Islam" in NY... I was always treated better, on the contrary.

DEARBORN, Mich. — **The Arab Muslims who came here eight decades ago to work on Henry Ford’s new assembly line believed their American future was limitless. But after five years on the home front in America’s war on terrorism, many of their descendants are hunkering down, covering up and staying put.

In this and similar enclaves, like those in northern New Jersey and Brooklyn, many Arab Muslims say their community is turning in on itself — shying away from a society increasingly inclined to equate Islam with terrorism.

“It’s as bad as after 9/11,” says Rana Abbas-Chami of the Michigan American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. “A lot of people are scared. They’ve changed how they do things.”

Some stay put. They don’t like to fly, cross the border with Canada or shop at malls outside the city. “It’s a feeling that if you go too far outside Dearborn, anything can happen,” says Osama Siblani, a local newspaper publisher.

Some blend in. They Anglicize their names (Osama Nimer, electrician, is now Samuel Nimer) or change them (Mohammad Bazzi, nurse, is Alex Goldsmith). They trim their beards. In public, they speak English instead of Arabic. They display the flag. They wear the Tigers cap.

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

yea like Syed in LOST! grr that makes me so mad!

anyways well I know this one freak Arab family and they got all paranoid after 9-11 so the whole family changed their names. Ranya to Renne and Hishaam to Harry, kids names changed too.

It’s one thing if you change your name but atleast pick something that doesn’t sound GAY. I mean HARRY?! wth?! I think I’d be embarassed telling people my Dad’s name was HARRY instead of Hishaam.

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

what? and deny some talentless indian actors the chance to diversify their acting portfolio and play a role differen than another version of apu? how heartless.

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

apu is white rajput hello come again.

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

^^ Jinnah's role in the movie with the same name was played by Christopher Lee and not by Amrish Puri or Ashok Kumar etc. A lot of Pakistanis have acted in hollywood movies too.

Re: Name change - due to insecurity!!

Apu's voiceover too is done by a white guy, moin pai.
