also known as Hypertension. We recently did a poll regarding hypertension asking the risk factors. Mostly people believed that eating oily food, being diabetic and living a stressful life can lead to hypertension eventually, specifically in Desi community.
Anyone knows, why Namak/Salt is usually prohibited to a patient with hypertension? No need to copy paste long passages from online, just right in layman’s terms. Explain what do you believe and what understanding do you have. Don’t have to be perfectly right and dont need to be embarrassed about not knowing it. Its just a learning process.
Can you define what hypertension really is for those of us who are unaware? Is it tension in the "hyper" stage?
and you say "namak ki bimari" is it literally, salt causes this?
Let me try.
Hypertension means high tension and it is referring to High Blood pressure in your arteries. And yes, Salt does have an effect on this blood pressure.
I would love to give out more explanation, which I would have done in the first post. But the reason I didn't, to hear other participants in this thread.
Salt makes water retention in body but to have high blood pressure with short lasting water retention is just not possible. Good Kidneys dump all salt and water if not needed.
Over 20,000 studies on hypertension have failed to really pinpoint the various causes of 'essential' hypertension and role of salt in hypertension.
There is no real need for salt restriction in 'pure' hypertension. (not associated with any other disease)
But if hypertension is associated with heart failure, the salt may be restricted to about 2 gm a day and the person is given advice not to add extra on food. Salt substitutes are not really good in other ways.
Anyhow with medicines like 'water pills' (diuretics) much of the salt issue is handled. In some treatment methods, these water pills are the first kind of medicines to treat hypertension. Not everyone believes on it though. Many other side effects of these drugs make things a bit complex.
