Namaaz, Sunnah, Fard, Nawafil and Vitr

Its said that Fard is mandatory yet the rest are not? Whats your say on it? Please keep it short and sweet, no loooong paragraphs and try to put some valid references.

CocoNut what you heard is correct.
However you forgot one category that is wajib.you mentioned vitr which are wajib.
Farz and wajib are must.Difference is that for wajib you can do kaffara(compensation) if you miss them but for farz there is no kaffara, you have to complete them.

Sunnah have two categories i.e. Sunnah Mo’akkida and Sunnah Ghair Mo’akkida.
You can say sunnah are recommended prayers. The Mo’akkida are very highly recommended and ghair Mo’akkida are recommneded but less highly.
You see it is quite simple. All muslims have to follow the Prophet(pbuh) as that is clearly said in the Quran. That is why the whole catgory of sunnah in every field(not just prayers)exists.Just like categories of Fard, wajib and nafal also exist in areas other than prayers.

Now the fard and wajib are those prayers which are abolutely must and we have to offer them or else our prayer is not valid.
Now the prophet(pbuh) used to pray more than just the fard.He used to pray more, a lot more.

Mo’akkida sunnah are prayers that he never missed unless there was any emergency. So muslims have to offer them aswell. But as they are not fard our prayers are valid without them but it is wrong never to offer them.We must offer them as often as we can.
You see these would must aswell for us had the prophet(pbuh) never missed them, ie they would be added to fard. But he did miss them in case of emrgencies etc. and never offered Qaza for the ones he missed. A prophet cannot do that with fard things. So that’s why they are not fard.
Ordinary muslims of course tend to miss them even in casese which are not emergencies and that to an extent is allright, as we are less pious than the prophet(pbuh).
But a muslim who very rarely offered them would be doing wrong as the prophet(pbuh) never missed them.

Now ghair’ Moakidda sunnah are those which the Propht(pbuh)used to offer regularly but also missed them sometimes even without emergency. So they are sunnah but not so much necessary as the Mo’akkidah ones.So in offering them we follow a sunnah but in not offering them we do nothing wrong.

Nafal are totally voluntary prayers and we offer them for sawab or to give thanks to Allah for his blessings, that’s all.

I hope this helps.

As for refferences you have to read fiqah and learn from there what the prophet(pbuh) practiced to understand these things.I have given a brief description above.

Br. Ahmed, thanx for refreshing the importance of offering Sunnat-i-Mo'akkida in Salah/Namaaz.
My question is: Are there more forms of Sunnat, other than Mo'akkida and Ghair Mo'akkida?

Indeed this helped a lot thank you

K-2,
As far as prayer is concerned I have only heard of the two types of sunnah I have mentioned above. I have never heard of any other kind.
