Filmstar Nagina, seven others shot dead
LAHORE—Former showbiz star Nagina Khanum was gunned down along with her daughter, sister, two teen-aged grandsons and three others in
a grisly, yet mysterious killing spree in her house in Zeenat Block, Allama Iqbal Town in the early hours of Wednesday, police and eyewitnesses said.
The police have termed the gory act as an outcome of some family dispute or the result of enmity.
“Its not an act of terrorism. Its purely an outcome of some family dispute or result of enmity”, SSP Investigation Chaudhry Shafqaat Ahmad told reporters at the crime scene, adding that the case will be investigated by the CIA staff.
He said it was premature to predict the real cause of the killing—they however are investigating into the incident on various lines. He hoped that culprits would be nabbed within 24 hours.
The hands of five victims were tied at their backs with a piece of rope and their bodies lying on a double bed while the bodies of three were lying in a pool of blood on the floor of the main bedroom of their house at in 314-Zeenat Block.
The victims included ** film actress of the past Nagina Khanum (62), her divorced daughter Amber (27), her two teen-aged grandsons Imran and Kamran, Nagina Khanum’s younger sister Chanda (42), Pushtu films director Nasir Raza Khan (52), driver Hayat (30) and housemaid Sonia (12). **
All of the victims were shot with a pistol in their temples. The assailants also ransacked the small-sized bedroom.
Amber, along with her minor son Arsalan, had been living with her mother after she was divorced a few years back. Nagina Khanum’s younger daughter Chanda is in Canada.
Nagina Khanum’s elder son, actor Nawaz, had gone to Murree a day before. Her younger son Ali remained asleep in his room at the first flour of the seven-marla house while Nawaz’s minor son had gone to school. The wife of Nawaz escaped the bloodbath as she had gone to the house of her in-laws after her husband had gone to Murree.
Ali was the first to reach the crime scene as he was awakened by his relative’s or friend’s phone call from their house in Samanabad at around 9:30 am.
“I received a call from our house in Samanabad that nobody was attending the phone in the drawingroom-cum-bedroom of the house”, Ali told the police, adding that when he came downstairs he found all the above said eight victims dead in the bedroom of the house.
He said he raised an alarm and then informed the police who reached the spot soon after the incident.
Capital City Police Chief DIG Khawaja Khalid Farooq along with SSP Investigation Chaudhry Shafqaat Ahmad, SSP Operations Aftab Ahmad Cheema, SP Sadar, SP Model Town and heavy contingent of the police reached the scene in no time and cordoned off the house.
“We have preserved the crime scene, taken fingerprints and photographs of the deceased”, the DIG said, adding that the killings might be the result of any monetary or family dispute. He said that all the victims were shot dead with pistol fire and the accused will be traced within 24 hours. He also did not rule out enmity behind the killings.
The killers SSP Investigation Chaudhry Shafqat Ahmad said, did not take away any gold ornaments or cash from the house. “The room might have been ransacked during the resistance put up by the victims”, he added.
He said that he could not say, at the moment, that the victims were administered some intoxicant before being shot dead. “It will be ascertained after the autopsies of the bodies”, he maintained.
It is surprising that no body either heard the sound of any gunshots or witnessed any one entering or leaving the house.
“I did not hear any sound of gunshots or hue and cry from the house”, next door neighbourer said who requested an animity. He said that the culprits might have gagged the victims with a piece of cloth and used silencer on the pistol or any other murder weapon. He said that people often visited the house of Nagina Khanum as she belonged to showbiz world.
A crowd of panic stricken people gathered at the scene but the police did not allow any one, even the mediamen, to enter the house before removing the bodies to the morgue for autopsy.
Teen-aged Guriya, who acts as an extra in films and often visited the ill-fated house said that she had come to the house of Nagina Khanum at around 7:00 am.
She said that Pushtu Films director Nasir Raza Khan had to come the house of Nagina Khanum in connection with his film business on Tuesday night.
She said that Nagina Khanum asked her to bring some bread for breakfast from the nearby mini market.
Meanwhile, she said, driver Hayat went to drop Arsalan to school. She said she left the house at around 8:00 am when all the inmates of the house were present.
The police had taken into custody five suspected persons for interrogation besides the wife of the deceased driver Hayat, Shama alias Kainat, who married Hayat after elopement and did not come to the house on Tuesday evening.
The police were looking for the aunt of Shama till the filing of this report as she had alleged that Nagina Khanum ‘used’ Shama as a prostitute.
“There were always quarrels over this issue”, a senior police quoted the aunt of Shama as having said.
A grief-stricken nephew of driver Hayat with tears flowing down his cheeks said that the in-laws of his uncle were very furious since the elopement of Shama alias Kainat.
The police are not ruling out the involvement of the in-laws of driver Hayat in the killing spree.
A police official said that Nagina Khanum, who contracted four marriages, had been allegedly running a brothel house in Samanabad area and used to arrange supply of teen-aged girls to Canada.
The Iqbal Town police had registered the case against unidentified assailants on the complaint of Ikramullah – the eldest son of the deceased Nagina Khanum.
