Nafs

What is nafs (Urdu word)?
How does it fit into a religious perspective? I have read some poetries in which this word is used under a negative light.

Re: Nafs

In my opinion, Nafs is the part of your soul that makes demands of all kinds. If it keeps getting what it wants, the demands keep increasing.

Re: Nafs

Assalamualaikum
I dont know exactly the meaning of "nafs"
But Allah describes three types of nafs in Quran, here these are:

1)Nafs e Mutmaina(Satisfied one)

يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ﴿٢٧﴾
*[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,(27)*surah fajr

2) Nafs e Ammara(that which is evil)

And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."(53) surah yusuf

3)Nafs e Lawwama (the one which regrets of doing evil and repent)

وَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ﴿٢﴾
And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection].*(2)surah qayyamah

It means the good one also exists..

Re: Nafs

The word nafs literally means "the soul" or "the self"... Similar to what Black Mamba said the nafs is the agent that gives "desire" to humans. It is the place that holds the appetite of humans ... We can either control it, with a conscious part of ourselves or let it control us.

More deeply it is the impetus for decision making. It is one of the advisors of irada (intention). If we don't tame it it will go out of control. Other than taming it ... It can also be directed ... Just like a horse.

There are some people whose 'hearts' tell them to do sin and they obey this inclination thus becoming sinners. By doing so they have given their nafs nourishment and the nafs becomes stronger and it will seek out more of this obedience.

In other cases many people who stop themselves from evil may be very inclined to sin, but don't ... Thus they exhibit the traits of a person holding back a wild horse as much as possible.

To train the nafs in to any way of being it requires continuous reminders and lots of conscious warning. It requires self punishment for disobedience and self praise for seeking out good things. In this manner one may be able to bridle his desires.

In a few cases the heart becomes aligned with good things and enables the body to manifest itself in prayer in ease because the nafs has actually acquired a desire to do good. This gift is available to all, but it is not accessed by all. Most people have to struggle against their desires
