yup and then we saw what happened after genuine elections, if that is the result of genuine elections, then I think we may be better off with rigged elections that we have had before then and since then.
PS: my last post was speaking in terms of current and very recent history and shrt term prospects for real democracy in the country..whether the elections are fair or not.

House of cards crumbling...as to why no one talked about the letter before the CJ was kidnapped by the government, maybe because nobody knew about the letter before, as these things tend to get lost in the news.
I'm very surprised that a huge Musharraf supporter like Niazi is even saying that Bokhari's account of his case is wrong.

dad's second cousin.
a very kind and humble man, very fond of kids and referred to them as our future. I grew up looking up to him, and actually helped him with the hamdard uni plans.
to me, he was what we need more of in our society..

Will we ever get out of this circle. It took less than 10 years from the end of Zia before people were looking to the army to 'save the country' again. Almost all the Army Chiefs after Aslam Beg were called on to 'do thier duty' ie step in and take over--and this was after Zia ul Haq. Mushy's rule has been far more benevolent by comparison, so how long will it take for people to pine for the army after they see the 'siyasatdaans' performing by themselves.
All this of course assuming that this does spell the end or the beginning of the end of Mush. Remember General Saab is a survivor, and he may well come out with a grand gesture to the CJ tommorrow which would once again flip the hearts and minds of a majority of the people and everything would be fine and dandy again.

I was a fan of Hakeem Mohammad Saeed since I was a kid, as I was an avid reader of Nonihal magazine for the kids. May he rest in peace.
However, I have heard lots of allegations against the Humdard group as well. One of the major one is that as Humdard group considers itself as Waqf, the amount of IT they pay is negligible. Once the government was pressurizing them to pay the tax on their income and the group threatened that if they were forced to pay tax, they will close down the Hamdard group and lay off all the employees and then the government backed off. Any comments?

its not that hamdard group considers itself as waqf, but that it is set up as a not for profit entity, a waqf, and for them to be not considered a waqf, first its status as a non profit needs to be challenged and cancelled. all of a sudden if the govt wants them to sart paying taxes as for profit entities then there is a proper procdure to do that. in US there are non profits liek Underwriters Laboratories which pay no taxes in US. US govt cant just show up and say hey you need to pay taxes...they need to challenge the not for profit status, or look at revenue streams and say that some of that can not be considered not for profit and thus taxes need to be paid on those. it was political...the type of politics that eventually saw Hakeem saeed being assassinated in front of his office.
i have heard allegations against edh group as well, but thats all they end up being.
I dont know much personally as I really have not had any discussions with how hamdard is run. from a organizational perspective my only interactiosn with Hakeem Saeed were when I was helping with curriculum planning for hamdard university.

sure, but the issue with that is how our political climate is. the next person takes over..freezes everything, even the good work being done by previous govt.. no credit is given, and the whole thing is restarted again.
oppositions purpose is not to just sit in opposition as a balance and as a bull**** check, but they are actively trying to just stop teh govt from gaining momentum and doing anything. I mean we are talking about assault on imdpeendent judiciary now, but when has our judicual system been proactive..not reactive or coerced into making sure that our leaders are not filling their oen pockets, harassing others, engaged in corruption etc..
I am all for democracy..please please please lets just have it. But not teh crap we have had before. niether the ruling party/coalition behaves the way it should nor the opposition party/coalition behaves the way it should.
and people buy that...because they are too stuck in personality worshipping to dig deeper.
I can buy the argument that because democracy has never really been left alone to thrive, it is immature..sure, I can buy that.
but we need to get out of persnality based politics. need to hold the leaders accountable, and demand plans, and demand results.

our systems of checks and balances has not worked and has not been working.
I mean ask our lawyers out in the street, what the hell was our judiciary doing when the elected crooks were doign what they do, what the judiciary was doing against ppl like altaf.
democracy cant be a free for all for those in power.
an uninterrupted democracy is what I want to see, but with checks and balances. I fail to understand why those checks and balances were not developed in 10 years of musical chairs between various ppl as prime ministers. they had enough time..they chose not to do it.
PS: good analogy of seed, but lets make sure that the seed is not rotten, and lets protect the seed and sapling and then tree from bugs and disease :)
