NAB all set to arrest Gilani in $1b graft case

ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has finalised arrangements for the arrest of former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani in Rs100 billion ($1 billion) Ogra-scam and a VIP house is being prepared to host the former premier.

Sources said after the refusal of former prime minister to co-operate with the bureau in its investigation, the bureau will apply for the issuance of arrest warrants for Gilani through Accountability Court.

The bureau has made arrangements for the arrest of Gilani and a safe house is being prepared in a posh sector of Islamabad to host the former PM.”

“Obviously he is a former prime minister and we cannot host him in our cell where Tauqeer Sadiq is being detained,” said a senior NAB official while referring to arrangement of VIP house for Gilani.

He said the defiance of Gilani has forced the agency to take the extreme measure as another former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf did not show such attitude when summoned by NAB to clear his position regarding the illegal appointment of Tauqeer Sadiq, the principal accused in Ogra scam.

Gilani who was summoned by NAB on July 18 to record his statement in the multi-billion scam, refused to appear before investigators claiming he enjoys immunity as a former prime minister. He had challenged NAB to arrest him.

Sources said fresh summons for Gilani had been issued after Tauqeer told the investigators that the former prime minister was directly responsible for issuance of licenses of illegal CNG stations through PM directives.

Sources said Tauqeer also told the investigation team that Gilani had played key role in increasing UFG benchmark from 5 per cent to 7 per cent, which resulted in huge loss to the national exchequer.

True to the motto of the PPP, that “Democracy is the best revenge”, Gilani did whatever he could have in his capacity as the PM to avenge the sympathy-laden mandate Pakistanis handed over to them after the death of Benazir Bhutto.

Has Gilani’s moment of truth arrived?

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) - Former prime minster Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that he has come to Islamabad by himself because it was being said that Punjab government is not cooperating in his arrest.

Talking to media on Tuesday on the occasion of meeting between Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and other opposition parties about presidential election he said that, “I have come to Islamabad by myself, and if someone wants to arrest me he can do it. It will also save the expenses”, he added.

The former PM said that he would not produce himself in front of any institution; he defended the immunity of President Asif Ali Zardari and will also fully defend himself, the former PM added.

“Only parliament has the authority to summon me,” he concluded.

Gilani said that court should send politicians home if it wants to run the government alongside running the judiciary.

‘‘I had informed the President that the distance between Adiala Jail and Prime Minister House is short; I have already been there for my turn but had to take responsibility as Prime Minister at president’s insistence,” he said further.

In the past judiciary had cleared me in the cases for which I had to go behind the bars. Audit points were leveled against chairman senate and prime minister.

How can my one appointment be wrong when my act of appointing Army Chief, DG ISI and other chiefs including Chief Justice were right, he said.

Revenge culture existed due to which I had to go behind bars for granting jobs to people, who are still providing services in the assembly secretariat, Gilani added.

He further said he took stand on presidential immunity and did not obey illegal directions of Chief Justice and had to write to judiciary that president enjoys immunity.

“If i can take stand on immunity to president then I can take stand on immunity to myself,” he said.
