Naam BigaRna

Its almost in every community that they shorten the long names (by extracting strange names). In Punjab, Rafiq becomes Feeqa, Rasheed becomes Sheeda.. In Sindh, Waliullah / Wali Muhmmad becomes Walloo.

How do you see this practice? Share some instances of such names you observed? Can this practice be ended by anyway like naming children with small names like Ali?

Re: Naam BigaRna

Its just another method of giving people nickname. Some nicknames come as derivative of orginal name,while others are totally different. An example would be calling salman/imran as mani etc...

Re: Naam BigaRna

but mani sounds cute, while sheeda sounds quite rude.

Re: Naam BigaRna

sheeda may sound rude to outsiders, but i don't think all "sheedas" hate their nick.
not a good practice but exists in almost all cultures not only in desi..
Alex = Alexander
Greg = Gregory
Dave = David
Matt = Mathew

there are lots of them

Re: Naam BigaRna

Sheeda doesnt sound rude at all.

I always thought these were actual names of people :hehe:

Shock level was high when I learned that those are not the real names, and they actually have real, normal names.
LIke Babri was actually Babar :open_mouth:

And yes, it doesnt happen only in desi lands.

Re: Naam BigaRna

Do Arabs have also this habit? I heard that they are very much particular about their names?

One more thing, many names contain prefix Abdul - Abd (like AbdurRasheed). People not only start taking names without Abdul, but also get Sheeda from Rasheed, which is a disrespect to the names of Allah. Isn't it?

Naam BigaRna

I hate that :mad:
Cause ek Dafa kisi ko Nick Pata chal jaye to wohi bulate Hain
And its actually sad k Real Name bhula Diya jata Hai
I’m mehreen And Some call me mehru then meher, mehri etc etc. :smack:

Re: Naam BigaRna

Arabs are usually very concerned about their names, and like to be called with full name, or at least no trim it to something like we do.
I do not have many arab friends other than my colleagues at workplace, and so far i've come across only one example...
Moe = Muhammad (some use it for Mosses too). Moe is sometimes used as short form of Muhammad, and this trend is only in Jordan/ Lebanon or people originating from there. Some arabs living in the Europe also do this.

Re: Naam BigaRna

Do Arabs have nick names like we have guddu, munni, pappoo, etc

Re: Naam BigaRna

no idea about that boss... i think every culture has nick names, i might ask someone
