** GEO Pakistan**** LHC reserves verdict on by-polls petition** Updated at: 1524 PST, Tuesday, October 06, 2009
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has reserved verdict on a petition filed by Punjab government in a bid to stay the upcoming by-polls in NA-123 (Lahore), NA-55 (Rawalpindi), PP-82 (Jhang) and PP-284 Bahawalnagar.
The court took serious notice for not presenting record by Election Commission of Pakistan and directed deputy attorney general to present the record within 15 minutes.
Justice Saqib Nisar declared that election is mandatory for democracy and rule of constitution. He said Election Commission in its order did not mention anywhere that details submitted by Punjab government has been reviewed completely. Government’s counsel Khawaja Haris said it is evident that Election Commission always consults with the government. Justice Nisar said law will be the winner in case of clash between law and tradition.
The chief of Awami Muslim League Sheikh Rashid in his argument said Election Commission gave full time to Punjab government and government is reluctant to organize by-polls for the sake of its own interests.
Manzoor Hussain Gilani Advocate said maintenance of law and order is provincial government’s responsibility and people should not be suffered.
