YANGON, Myanmar - The top U.S. diplomat in Myanmar says the junta is not ready to accept American aid workers to help cyclone survivors.
Shari Villarosa, the U.S. charge d'affairs in Yangon, said she met with Myanmar Deputy Foreign Minister Kyaw Thu on Friday to discuss American relief operations.
Myanmar says it will accept aid from all countries, but prohibits the entry of foreign workers who would deliver and manage the operations.
Villarosa said she was told the junta is “not ready” to change that position.
Myanmar has blocked foreign aid workers, international press and other foreign rescue agencies. Furthmore the Aid that was allowed into Myanmar over the past 48 hours has been seized and has not found its way to the victims. A fear UN had to begin with, and now UN has blasted the Myanmar govt for their rigid attitude.
Will India use its influence on Myanmar Junta and make things easier?
its unclear why India would want to be associated with, or infact be the patron of such a regressive, brutal regime which puts any violence in Tibet to shame.
I guess the value of buddhist monks is variable depending on where they are
But India has previously opposed stronger sanctions against Myanmar and has openly supported the Govt. So you would think India would do the right thing and ask for Myanmar to return the favor and allow international Aid, and Aid workers to pitch in and provide for the people.
It's a huge question/concern for a progressive country like India.
when not biting bullets, India is a leading voice in raising awareness about the plight of buddhist monks in China, where the violence has been relatively low in recent times compared to Burma where God only knows whats happening.
i dont blame the burmese for refusing to take aid workers, its a well known fact that these aid agencies are infiltrated by spies. if they allow them in expect more organised rebellion against the government. either demo crazy or crazy demo
sounds like another saddam type bull story to hurt an ally of china or some other strategic reason
