I can understand that they would want to lift the veil after the nikkkah ceremony. Thats an excellent observation. However, the mu dekhai is not a public rasam. In very old times the dulhan always had a veil throughout the entire wedding ceremony and so once the couple retired to the room, the veil was supposed to come off and the husband was to offer the bride a present called mu dekhai to ask permission to lift her veil.
I also want to share my observation about what I have witnessed nowadays. The concept of purdah has become almost fictional. I have been to some weddings where the girl does pardah otherwise, but on her wedding, she is made up like a regular bride. I am always curious why they dont maintain the pardah on their wedding days. Its hypocrisy. I am not judging those who do or dont do pardah, I am, however, interested to know why those who actually do practice pardah otherwise, ignore it at their weddings.
Thoughts?
I misspoke. You're right about mou dekhai. The veil sometimes gets lifted when they do the mirror rasm...don't know the name of it though.
As far as purdah...I'm already relaxed about it. Yes it is a hypocrisy, but every girl wants to look glamorous on her wedding. Sometimes the temptation is too much. They're human too, lol.
