My vacuum of ten years has died..

After a sufficient mourning period I am ready to buy a new vacuum. Any suggestions?

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

go for dyson, we are using our for about 10yrs also, and it still works absolutely fine. really great company..

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

chalak, I tried the Dyson D40 Animal. It worked fine for a couple weeks and then it died on me- it has an overheating issue! Shocking for such an expensive machine. I was able to return it easily since I bought it from Costco but after that I am hesitant to get another one. I wonder if the quality is the same as the older models. The suction was slightly better than my previous vacuum (Eureka Boss- died due to owner negligence:teary1:). I loved that it was much lighter weight and easy to maneuver but the canister was too small. The search continues.

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

I was going to say Dyson too. My mum has had hers for years and through insurance it’s been repaired a lot of times. One time the repair guy did tell us that the build quality and power of the newer machines was not as good as the older models.

Having said that, do not buy cheap or heavily discounted models!! I bought one that should have been the same as my mum’s one from one of these for trade discount places (think it might have been makro) and it was rubbish.

There are so many models; if you can easily return after buying if you are not happy, then try another model.

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

stoppit may I ask why it needed to be repaired many times? That seems problematic to me. I’ve never had to repair my older vacuum, just replace filters yearly.

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

Anyone have:

Amazon.com: Shark Navigator Elite Professional Lift-away Rotator - Model NV501: Home & Kitchen

It seems to be getting rave reviews.

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

Because there are 8 people in my parent’s house plus guests all the time so it gets used a LOT. Everything in their house is under appliance insurance because it gets such heavy usage. With the dyson, the motor has gone once and other more minor problems.

In my experience, nothing cleans quicker and faster though.

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

Thanks, stoppit!

Have the same deal. A lot of people (including toddlers!) + frequent guests + cats = heavy usage. A good vacuum is priceless!

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

Im about to move into my own place and in search of a vacum too. My sister also recommended me the dyson. At the moment on their website they have a sale ad free delivery. Im going to go for one and it also comes with 5 year warranty. My sister has had few problems but she said their service is really good they come and fix it for u without an issue

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

Mizz, they come to your house and fix it for you? Still a hassle but better than having to take it somewhere. Is this under the regular warranty or did she buy supplemental insurance. I will call Dyson to confirm.

I just got turned off by them since the one I bought broke within two weeks. I used it 4-5 times only and it overheated. Maybe I just got a lemon but I don’t want to deal with frequent repairs esp. with a vacuum.

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

We had the same service both during the initial warranty and then later under insurance. The former is just direct whereas the insurance company arrange it int he latter case.

I’d say it’s about every 2-3 years that something was going wrong.

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

Was the warranty that comes With it for free. She said the faults wre minor nothing major and yes they came home

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

Dyson all the way!

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

If your old one lasted a whole decade, why not just get the same one for another 10 years again?

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

nnabid, the newer version of the model I had got bad reviews. Also, the vacuum market has changed considerably over the last decade and I want the best the technology has to offer. Dyson and Shark have obviously become very popular; I don’t even remember considering them back in ~2001-02 when I made my purchase.

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

I don’t have that model of the Shark, but I do have a Shark Navigator and it is AWESOME. Definitely check it out!

Re: My vacuum of ten years has died..

So I bought the Shark Rotator NV502 and so far it is fabulous! It has amazing suction and maneuverability. It lifts off of the base and becomes a canister vacuum so stairs are so easy. The only downside so far is that if you’re using the hose it tends to tip over unless it’s on an included caddy. So it means an extra thing to store and lug up and down. Hopefully it will last a long time…
