My skin's mystery

Need help solving this mystery.

So, I have noticed that I have probably been using the wrong shade of foundation. I look darker in it and it looks a little cakey, even though it is Physician Formula’s mineral foundation. Don’t know what is up with it.

Secondly, I am thinking of going to work without foundation, but I know what will happen. Even by the time I get to work, my face will look unfresh. It usually feels oily but doesn’t look it. It also reddens, as if I have been in the sun and am tired.

I don’t usually get pimples. When I do, they are either on my cheeks (near my nose) or forehead. I get them on my cheeks when I haven’t been taking care of myself (stress, not washing face as much), but forehead ones appear for no reason. Plus, I rarely ever note oil on my cheeks to believe that I have oily skin (when I am wearing makeup). So, I think I have combination skin.

Now my questions are, why does my face redden and feel oily (including cheeks) when I am not wearing any makeup? And what can I do about it?

Do I have oily skin? :S

I am using L’Oreal’s Skin genesis face wash and Neutrogena’s Healthy Defense SPF 30 moisturizer. I also tone with Nivea’s sensetive skin, alcohol free toner (alcohol dries my skin out).

Any ideas what’s up?

Thanks a bunch!

Re: My skin's mystery

About foundation, you must have the right shade and you must blend it well to have even finish and not the cakey one. You may try a hydrating if your skin is not oily. But from what you wrote, it seems like it is oily. So, change the brand. Experiment with 2-3 good ones. Check the shade in sunlight to see if it matches, always go over foundation with compact powder and you should be fine.

I think you have oily skin, try using a drop of moisturizer mixed with about a tablespoon of rosewater instead.

Mineral make-up, is either a hit or a miss. Your skin doesn't turn 'oily' when you use it because the foundation (mineral powders) soak-up the sebum that's excreted with time.

For day-wear how about you switch to a tinted moisturizer or just a concealer for your blemished and a powder?

Tip* to freshen-up your makeup during the day...carry a small facial mist spray and spritz your face with it and follow-up with your regular pressed powder

Re: My skin's mystery

I think you should use deep cleanse your face once a week or atleast once every two weeks - definately use face scrub...it seems like your pores are getting clogged with excess oil.
You should use a good moisturizer after washing your face.
For your mineral foundation, it seems like you are using the wrong shade. Your skin might have a yellow undertone, but you are using the foundation with more of a pink/red undertone. Not every brand has global shades!
Try Urban Decay mineral foundation for yellower undertones

Mac's 'FIX + ' is very good, spraying it before & after makeup application can hydrate skin without making it oily, refreshes the skin, and it also sets the makeup in place.

That is exactly it. I can't find any shade that works for me. Even the ones with yellow undertones either tend to be a little lighter, or a bit darker.

I use a face scrub at least once a week, I think. I will look into Urban Decay. Thanks!

Ok, so past two days, I went without my foundation.

My skin did not get oily or red by the time I got to work, as I had imagined. My forehead did get that way by 4pm and cheeks felt a little oily by that time.

I am assuming that I am still mostly combination. But as the weather gets warmer, I can expect more oil, in all areas. In which case, I will have to change my face wash and moisturizer.

Gina, you are right. I realized that all I really need is some concealer. I can go without wearing ANYTHING on the face and still look alright. And thanks for the tip.

Ahh, round 5395895834 of search for a good foundation is coming up.
