My review of the HTC Windows Phone 8X

Had the opportunity to spend some time with a friend’s brand new HTC Windows 8X.

My first impression:

  • Wow! What a sleek and nifty looking device.
  • Screen a bit small for my taste.
  • Hmmm, can I hold it?

Upon careful examination and brushing aside my undeniable affection and admiration for my own S3, here are the features I was impressed with:

  • Good hold, feels solid
  • Has a great soft-touch finish on the back
  • Screen is solid and doesn’t require a protector
  • You can match your windows tiles with your choice of phone
  • You don’t require an additional case/cover as the build is sufficient

Coming to the Windows 8 part:

  • Tiles didn’t look too bad. Husband hated them. Thinks they look childish. I’m OK with it.
  • I like that all your social networking apps are grouped into one tile called “People” for example, so u receive instant live updates/feeds.
  • Not too thrilled about Bing. Dunno how their TellMe voice app rates. Couldn’t try that out.

Other:

  • The camera is quite basic, not as many features as I’d like.
  • Simple interface
  • Not much in terms of available apps at this time as compared to Android.
  • Separate kids corner with a locked screen with parent approved apps. Like this!
  • NFC, yes! However no back to back syncing like in the S3.
  • What I really liked: wireless charging feature! Think that’s pretty cool.
