My Plants...!!

I dunno what happened …I was quite enjoying gardening for the first time in my life …but my plants are dying…:frowning:

Its been real hot weather for more than a week here…n initially I blamed the hot weather …but now I think its my no knowledge to blame!

I had three rose plants …in a rectangular big pot …even though the man at garden centre advised me not to buy roses …he sais they are high maintenance for the weather here …but I insisted to get coz I love roses …
khayr when they started showing sign of something wrong i went there again , to ask what to do …I was given a spray n some tablets …never knew these things will be more costly than the roses themselves :o

khayr …long story short …nothing could save the roses …two plants have died already …n remaining one doesn’t look good

then cucumbers …tomatoes…n corrinder …all r just drying up …only two plants are actually good at this point …green chillies …n carrots

i desperately need to fix at least the corriander one …we don’t get corriander very easily here (only on south asian stores …n that too are not anywhere near me) plus who wants to pay ! euro for 3-4 stems!

Any help…???

Re: My Plants...!!

I dunno much about what to do now exceptt for roses... my mom sprays the water saved from washing meat n fish to keep the rose fresh and alive.. whenever you cook meat or fish, save that water and just sprinkle it in the pot or place, wherever your rose plant is, that will save your plant from dying.

you can do the indoor green house where there is enough sunlight but not too much heat for coriander n green chilies etc. i m not sure but that might work. :-)

Just wanted to add that water your plants at the right time that is eitehr early morning or late nite taht would reduce evaporation.

check you soil as well, there might be something that you are unaware of and that could be the root cause of this problem,,, but then again, i m just assuming this as an option. :-)

Re: My Plants...!!

afia, before you spray anything please do give some water to these plants on a daily basis.

gem, that's the most bizare piece of advice ...spraying with meat and fish washed water? wouldn't the plants die of salmonella?

Re: My Plants...!!

ai hai funguy.. its a proven totka of my house and it works with our rose plant.. I will ask my mom about the reason behind it, if there is any, but i have seen it working :p

Re: My Plants...!!

Afia, apart from right amount of water, it is also necessary to give no more or no less than the recommended sun shine. Also pruning the bad leaves & branches from the good ones is also a good practice.

Re: My Plants…!!

ive been trying to save my mom’s plant since she’s left. before she left it was my bro’s responsibility but when she returned, they were are dead :o so she assigned the job to me. now i try best not to forget to water them every week but the meat/fish washed water is a news. i dont know what kind of plants these are but not rose plants. i cant even try cz i dont cook andl i cant even take a risk cz mom’s gonna kill me if it didnt work.

until now, they are doing well, :mash:

Re: My Plants...!!

My ammi used to put chai patti into the soil - you know, after making tea, you filter out the chai patti - apprently it adds nutrients to the soil. I have also heard that rinsing milk bottles into the soil helps. And that fish water actually helps fix nitrogen into the soil. Don't know about the smell though.

Good luck with your plants!

Re: My Plants...!!

move your roses to a cooler part of the garden, somewhere shady and pull off the dry leaves and prune back the dry sticks....it is unlikely that they dried due to the heat as youve only had excessive heat fro a week.

give it lots of water every evening.... all of them even the dead plants because they may look dead to you but the roots may be alive.
From what you say I think you may have killed them with too much food...too much chemicals can burn the cells of the plant.

the Cucmbr and tomato and coriander plants are ok with hot weather (toms and cucmbers are grown in the mediteranean), they mey be drying up as tehy are getting to the end of their lifecycles

have they produced toamotoes and cucumbers...the coriander should be picked when the each plant is about ten to twenty cm tall and the stems are tender...anything beyong thu=is and the plands start to produce flowers and seed... if it is in that stage wait fro the seeds to develope...they will be much more aromatic than any you buy in the shops.
coriander has a short lifecycle.

hopefully theyll all grow back and then
Afia, we wont have to call you a murderer!

Re: My Plants...!!

Coriander will seed and die when the temperature is too hot. Try growing them indoors and cut off any flowers that appear unless you want to get seeds for the next batch of plants. For roses, avoid wetting the leaves when you water them in the evening. Crushed and dried eggshells are excellent for roses.

In addition to water, plants need food too. Miracle Gro works wonders with all sorts of flower and vegetable plants... Plants need Nitrogen, Phosphoric Acid and Potassium. You can find lots of organic recipes online. It’s usually boring process (for me) to make these fertilizers so I just use my trusted Miracle Gro.

Re: My Plants...!!

thank you all for the input!!! :)

gtg.....never heard about this totka ....but i think i'll try ....

funguy.....i do water them ....even though there's nothing left to water in rose n corriander pots

ahmedjee.....sun is the only factor i can't control.....our terrace is very sunny ....n these rosesw were meant to be there ....n for old leaves n branches ...i used to clean n cut all pots/plants once a week .........i dunno what went wrong

lil mermaid....i've heard n seen this too ....but i didn't think of it ....mainly coz no one in my family drinks tea ...n we only buy it when we have guests (that is once in 5 years) :D

Lazy D.....don't categorize me as a murderer,.....i'm still struggling to save my plants .....crying
thankfully cucumber n tomatoes seem somewhat better ....n no no cucumbers n tomatoes are produced so compl;eting life cycle is out of question

as for corriander i saw the flowers n the seeds formation too....but i left it there on purpose n stopped picking leaves thinking they'll grow again......but now there's nothing :(

in case of roses ....yeas i sprayed generously thinking they'll recover .....never knew my love is gonna kill 'em!!what should i do now??

aishaA ....can i use the egg shells at this stage too...???i mean i'm almost convinced i gave them food n medicine more than required .....i've these small seeds type ....known as plant food ....the man on garden centre said it was great! :(

Re: My Plants...!!

Go to the man in the garden centre and give him a big whack around the head, and then go back home and sow some more coriander seeds for your next batch of coriander.

Coriander grows, flowers and seeds and then the plant dies.... it is an "annual" plant and must be resown each year or every few weeks...it doesnt grow more leaves as its done its lifes work which was to make the seeds

the same is true of tomato and cucumber plants...after they fruit they will wilt and die(you throw them away after this. have they produced flowers? flowers need insects to pollinate them... if they dont get pollinated the flowers wilt and die and fall off!

from what you say about your roses it looks like you did love them too much(murderer;)

just keep watering and if the die, they die

next year get another variety

I didnt think Germany would be that hot...what the temp where you are Afia?

Re: My Plants...!!

Lazy D ....!!
there are so far no flowers on cucumber n tomato plants.....!!! ok i'll wait n see.....n how will the insects come once the flowers are there ....do i need to send 'em an invitation...???

hmmm... i'm disappointed to learn about corriander .... so does it mean if i keep picking leaves n don't give it a chance to 'complete its cycle' it will not die ....or it will...??:o

Germany isn't hot usually ....in winters its terribly cold (Brrrrrrr) n summer is funny ....you'll hardly have 12C one day ...n the next day could be 35C......keeps fluctuating but mostly pleasent n more on the warm side!

Re: My Plants...!!

coriander will eventually grow back but its not worth doing..

just grow more, try filling those little plastic vegatable containers with soil and then grow the coriander every two week...you should have an ongoing supply
