Since you had taken it out in the initial stages of the accident , I think it can still be saved. just try to open it and dry it out , it should work, may be , it is a remote chance. And do not use clothes dryer , or hair dryer to dry it just put it at some open space . NO I AM NOT KIDDING OR JOKING.

So I guess you have no insurance? This one time my sister spilled coke on my PDA. I immediately picked it up (after about 5-10 seconds when I got out of the shock) and took a blow drier and dried it. It started working fine but then after few minute the screen had colorful lines and it started dying. I had no insurance. I took it to the store and said check the phone and tell me why it’s dead. The girl could not figure out what happened because all parts were dry, there was no water damage on the battery since I immediately dried it. So she gave me a new phone. If the water damage is not obvious, may be you want to do that 
If not, don’t pay retail to buy a new phone. Simply go to e-bay and buy a used phone for much less price.

I have Cingular and they give a new, old model phone for free after one year. Check for that possibility.

Who said you need to lie? I didn't lie. I simply gave them the phone and said my phone is not working. She didn't ask me what happened or what did you do. She simply took my phone, checked the battery or any other liquid spots to determine liquid damage and said not sure why it's working, but since it's under 1 year manufacturer's warranty, I'll give you a new one.
I have verizon too and they are pretty good. Again, it depends on whether you dried it immediately or thought tough luck and didn't bother to dry it. It depends on the condition of the phone. I think the account holder will have to go. So unless your cousin is the account holder, they wouldn't listen to him.

i dont actually like the verizon people they seem to have attitude...but that is just my opinion

If your phone had sim card and if your contacts were saved in sim , they can be transfered by your provider.
