True that, but i am unable to understand “any” use case which can’t be satisfied by a smartphone.
I have a playbook (lets not discuss about its quality). I believe its more portable than any tablet since its 7" only. It fits in my pocket easily (if i have to take it somewhere). Even then I don’t feel like using it. My HTC Desire fulfill all of my requirements.

watching youtube
listening to music
playing games
reading books
name anything and htc do it for me. I don’t feel like carrying a tablet + a cell phone all the time.
I would salute steve jobs that he made people go crazy after a piece of brick which was already in the market but no one cared. No sooner iPad was launchde everyone got crazy about tablets.
see - those are all use-cases that I categorize as personal utility… and I agree that tablets and smartphones can pretty much be substituted easily.
the use cases that I’m using my tablet in are primarily around lightweight productivity… having it on me in meetings as a substitute for my writing pad … having it with me on the bus to read large pdf files… having it with me while I’m out for a coffee/lunch with colleagues when I don’t know what the scope of our discussion will be and I’m ready to share docs with them on-the-fly.
I’ve owned tablets since 2006 so I don’t belong to the category of those who bought into the hype either.
My work involves a lot of adhoc information requirements and its imperative for me to be connected anywhere I am. The emails I send/receive are also too long for me to use my smartphone for. So a tablet totally makes sense for me.
On the contrary, my wife’s work routine is very structured. She’s stationed at her desk / only has meetings at work… doesn’t need to be connected while on the move… and for her, a smartphone is all she needs. Like I said, there’s no imposition on anyone to own a tablet - to each his/her own.
I dunno if tablets are all that especially after the advent of ultrabooks. i mean the ultrabooks do the same thing and more (you can use MS Office for once unlike tablets), and prices are supposed to drop further next year as intel subsidizes them next year.
PS Personally, I used a toshiba thrive for some while and I think it is the best out of all, unless size is everything for you then samsung or ipad, as it had the SD card and flash drive ports in one place that other tablets can’t compete with. I mean you can’t be in cloud all the time, so why not have accessible ports when tablets are all about accessibility?

Why do streaming video and flash sites we use for watching cricket not work on tablets? I just got a motorola xoom…but its 50% of what I expected…
AA, the problem is the disconnect between the various standards that these companies use. Apple decided to not allow Adobe flash on their mobile platform. Then some site use the Microsoft Multimedia streaming platform which is not compatible with other platforms. So in a nutshell everyone wants to dictate what can and cannot be done on their devices. They don’t give any thoughts to what the end-user wants, except their money.
