Bronzer can go so wrong (I do love it when it's done proeprly though) and it won't help with flash photography.
How do you apply? I would use a flat, synthetic foundation brush and use the tiniest bit and really blend it all over (like a tiny dot for one cheek, then move onto the next) etc etc. Using a sponge or fingers will make it too thick.
The coverage needs to be really sheer in application. Following that, a good powder is a must, it will set the foundation, make it look even (since you are applying sheer it may be a little uneven) and should help with the photography.
