My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

Sounds like he is a sincere guy, but he probably knows there isn’t much he can do to change status quo in Indo-Pak relationship.

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would consider his job “well done” if ties with Pakistan return to normal before he leaves office, local media quoted him as saying on Sunday, weeks after Singh’s diplomatic push at the cricket World Cup.

The neighbours have slowly tried to rebuild a fragile trust shattered by the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which Singh’s government blamed on Pakistan-based militants in collusion with the country’s spy agency.

According to a recently released Wikileaks cable, Singh has led the push for peace with Pakistan despite misgivings from members of his own administration, including the National Security Adviser.

“Well, if I can succeed in normalising relations between India and Pakistan as they should prevail between two normal states, I will consider my job well done,” Singh told reporters on board his plane returning from a visit to Kazakhstan, according to the Press Trust of India.

Singh had invited his Pakistani counterpart, Yusuf Raza Gilani, to watch their two teams square off in the semi-final of the cricket World Cup at the end of March.

In a major confidence-building measure ahead of the match, Islamabad also agreed to let Indian investigators travel to Pakistan to probe the Mumbai assault. Their foreign ministers are due to meet in July.

For Singh, the push for peace may be a way of regaining the policy initiative after his government has been battered by months of corruption scandals that could dent the ruling Congress party’s chances in state elections this year. – Reuters

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

trade between the countries was initiated during his administration. that's a giant step towards a good relationship by building trust and dependency on each other. has anybody read any updates on that endeavor.....?

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

We all want to believe in fairy tales :)

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

^it's reality buddy, trade's already underway, read the news :p. the relationship between western european countries during the early 1900s was similar to that of india and pakistan's. look at them now in a european union, 70 yrs after world war 2

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

India-Pakistan is more complex than europe. You are also forgetting it took a devastating war and the threat of Soviet Union to bring europe together with america holding it as a glue in terms of NATO. But even today, there are cracks in EU as you can see in Burlusconi's bursts against EU for not allowing tunisian refugees to travel to other countries in europe.

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

this is so pathetic! yet we expected of and respected him so much! now he is scrambling to make some statement to build a legacy such as 'my job is done'!

No Manmohan Singh! Make a statement apologizing to India for sittinng dumb and deaf even as Sonia and Raja and others looted the country, then quit the government. Become a decent man again

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

I wasn't talking about things like trade and 'cricket diplomacy', but about PEACE.
You can't compare the situation of western european countries in the early 1900s with that of Pakistan and india. There are too many differences and hostility, so peace between your and my country cannot become reality.
Manmohan Singh could be sincere, but it's a mission impossible. Be optimistic, but at the same time realistic.

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

Did he get permission from Sonia Maino?

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

Well said :k:

There are more important issues facing India than normalizing relationship with Pakistan.

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

Normalizing ties with Pakistan will help both countries, they will be able to spend more money on public issues then on military.

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

My respect for Manmohan if he is sincere to achieve peace. But peace wouldn't come alive by playing cricket or trade. It is getting Kashmir problem solved. And when India decides to take foot off Kashmir we will then believe Indian leaders are true in their efforts to resolve conflict. By the way, same goes to Pakistani leaders as well. If Pakistani leaders are sincere to take Kashmir seriously and solve it for Kashmiris sake and their future, it is then the peace or normalization is expected with Indians. Until then, Mr. Manmohan's statement as this is nothing but political statement.

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

It is just a statement and underneath this statement foundation of a new war has been laid... the foundation which will take the two countries to a war no matter what... Building Dams on Rivers and holding waters of Pakistan is not going to be ignored for ever.., time will come when the public pressure in Pakistan would make the Pakistani govt to do ( not talk only) about it, surely, India is not building/Built those dams to just back-off whenever asked... there is going to be more reason than Kashmir to have a brutal war between the two...

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

Sonia probably told him to talk about something other than work, politics and money. She sent him to a cricket match, then abroad for some vacation and now to blabber like this.

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

Agreed, but like I said in my post normalizing ties with Pakistan is not the most important issue for the PM to focus on. The Indian government's priorities have to be clear.

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

correct 1000%
we should burried our past, it was when and when now we are two seperate nations, have to think about indoor huge problems rather then spend trillions of $$ on defence.

It is getting Kashmir problem solved. And when India decides to take foot off Kashmir we will then believe Indian leaders are true in their efforts to resolve conflict.

and this is the key to open a lock.

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

why is it the most important thing to 'normalize Pak relations'? India has enough wealth to fund most 'public needs' even after spending on military. Our problem is our politicians and baboos spend it all on themselves. Spending less on military will only give them more to swindle.

I am all for calming things down with Pakistan but most of that has to be Pakistan's actions

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

[quote=“EyEsOnSkY, post:34, topic:239723”]

And that belief is the reason why relations have not normalized in the past, and will not normalize in the future if you keep holding on to the Kashmir dream. The key to peace and normalcy is for Pak to move beyond Kashmir, and focus on other real issues.

Exactly :k:

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

@Lusi - the other thing I forgot mention is, India's defense expenditure is a lot more driven by defense against China rather than Pakistan. So any 'peace dividend' in Indo-Pak relations will be non-trivial but not material to our military budget

Re: My job is done if India-Pakistan ties normalise: Indian PM

Oh really?

Watch this. And think twice.

The truth is, your country is obsessed with Pakistan.

[quote=“The_Player, post:27, topic:225777”]

You call it a ‘Kashmir dream’, I think it’s a necessary obligation to save them from hindu terror. By the way, Kashmir is not the only reason  And the key to peace is for india to move beyond Pakistan.
