As the title suggests, i have 2 graphics cards running SLI.
They both show hot on SpeedFan, but one of them is really really burning up.
Idle temp at 90C
Is that scary or what? I have cleaned the fan on the GPU and made sure it was getting proper ventilation within the case. What else can i do? Should i demount the heatsink/fan, apply some fresh thermal and reseat the heatsink/fan on it again?
Or am in the need for better heatsink/fan package for GPUs?
I think you are not newbie to tech but still want to ask if
you have installed the drivers provided to you originally from the graphic card company.
you have installed the inf files of your motherboard.
you have got a good casing that has appropriate air flow mechanism.
Yes both are/were new from XFX Graphics.
The case isn’t phenomenal as could be like (Antec 900) or anything, but it’s pretty decent. It gets decent airflow.
Since posting yesterday, i have a ticket with XFX to get replacement heatsink/fan, so lets see if that actually goes through. Or i might just have to get an aftermarket heatsink/fan i guess.
teggy,, I m pretty sure you have already done, everything, what most of us would recommend. what I want to know did it start all of a sudden or you were experiencing it.. Also whats your room temperature usually... can you try to leave your casing open for sometime.
The room temp is cooler than average room temp (cuz of central air conditioning)
It was working fine, i just noticed the temps were in the 60s about 2 weeks ago, and on SpeedFan even that temp shows as a flame, so i looked inside the case and the fan looked dusty, so thought i'd clean it anyways. So, I Did that and since then it hasn't worked. And that was last week. I have made sure the connection from fan to card is secure and all that, but no difference. Now the idle temp is 90+ (insane i tell ya)
Update is that XFX is sending out a replacement cooler. But i'm wondering if i should invest in aftermarket for better cooling, or new cooler (even if stock) would suffice?
One of my card is working fine, and temp stays at 60-63 idle.

when you cleaned the fan, did you also removed the heatsink?
90 degree in IDLE mode is definitely not normal, I would suggest buy a better cooler and also check your heatsink. It seems like it's not properly in-contact with the surface, you may have to apply fresh thermal after cleaning it.
Yes, i thoroughly cleaned out the heatsink/fan. I had to take off the heatsink for better access to all the nooks/crannies.
What's the thumb rule for thermal paste on GPU? Is it the same as CPUs...a very thin layer between cpu and heatsink? Or is it supposed to be thicker?
Reason i ask is because when i took off the heatsink, the paste looked pretty thick (factory, so must've been applied heavily), does the same amount have to be applied again? I applied average amount, a semi-thick layer, enough to maintain contact with heatsink plate and chip.
hmmmm the amount doesn't matter as it is used for better thermal contact with surface and heat sink; As long as there is enough grease to eliminate any thermal isolation it should not be a problem. The other difference could be the TYPE of gel and it's thermal conductivity.
