My first diary

i was going through some of my old diaries last night… do any Guppies around here keep diaries? Do you write in them regularly? For me, diaries are a part of me - i don’t write in them regularly, sometimes months will go by and i won’t feel like touching it. Sometimes i’ll write just two lines, sometimes two hours will be spent on my diary. It really depends upon my mood and what i feel like sharing.

i was six years old when i first started writing a diary, i still have my first diary - a very, very VERY small one - very ‘girly looking’ on the outside. i still remember the day that i got it. i even thought of scanning some pages from it, but they’re so immature and my handwriting’s awful :o But it’s so much fun to see how you used to think when you were six years old, as compared to five/fifteen years later. It’s interesting to see how your perspectives change (or not) when you are 16 as opposed to 20 … the people who used to be in your life at one particular time, how you described them in your diary, how your perspectives changed as experiences forced an alteration, etc.

Do any of you keep diaries/journals? How often do you write in them? Have you ever shared them with anyone - siblings, close friends, etc.?

i have a Journal .. rarely write anything ... always bring it along when i go to pak ... do write alot then ... feelings and things i have seen, experience, observed etc ... sometimes i will take it out and read it ... and will go ... wow .. things change a lot as time passes by ... and as for sharing it ... na .. never nor would .... hehe

heh so you would never share it, eh? My sister and i had this thing that we promised each other when we were 15 or 14 i think - if either of us were to die before the other, then we’d get to read the other one’s diary:D :smack: Stupid, i know… Khair, there are some things in diaries that i would not feel comfortable sharing with most people.

Just out of curiosity, why do you not write when you are outside of Pakistan? Is it because you find your experiences when travelling are much more ‘interesting’ or just that you would prefer to write about your personal experiences, with family and friends, while in Pakistan?

i also have a diary ..

I write everyday account in it too

i mean:

  • aaTay daal ka bhaao
  • kal kiyaa pakkay gaa?
  • aaj kiyaa pakaanaa hai?
  • biryaani haftay kay kiss din bannay gee iss dafa?
  • kiss kiss ko aaj say qarz nahIN denaa

waghaira waghaira …

PS: Mod: feel free to delete my reply if u think I am not welcomed here:).. thanks :flower1:

I have a book where I write all my dreams, mental images that flash through my mind, certain instincts...

hehe.. I am a diary-bug.. it has always been a companion for me.. don't write everyday though but it always keep me in touch with myself.. (: .. I don't even remember when I really started.. whenever I read my old ones they always make me smile, reminding me that maybe life has changed but I haven't change alot in many ways..

hey Nadia, why don't you share the ones you wanted to scan.. I would be really interested to read from a kid diary :D

A trend had arisen in Pakistan where people kept ‘scrap books’…I am talking about maybe 10-15 years ago or so…

The scrap book would have lots of questions beginning with your name, phone numbers e.t.c then job, favourite this and favourite that and blah blah…The questions would be many…

Anyhow my sister made a scrap book once and I filled it…Man, I read it like after 6 or 7 years and some of the answers just made me want to crawl up and die… But they were cute answers…I figured out I was a very naive child, and still am…:halo:

My current diary is about 6 years old and I don’t fill it everyday…It’s just filled with songs and poetry that I once aspired to publish or sing…Now it’s somewhere underneath my piles of clothes…

But it’s sure nice to know where you were at a certain time in your life…Sometimes I get the feeling I have grown, and sometimes like I’ve regressed…But yeah, it’s great to have old memories of stuff…Some of them at least…

i used to keep diary’s..i remember my first one..i got it as a present..it even had a cute little lock and key and i wouldn’t let my mom see it…lol…that was like 4th grade..hehe…yeah..ive kept my share of diary’s …and its kinda weird looking back at them…seeing how much you have grown and matured :flower1:

Nadia thats so sweet that you still have your diary from such a young age. I used to keep a diary on and off during childhood because someone or other used to give me those little diaries with the key and lock for my birthday.

same schedule .. nothing much to write .... so i write it when i am in Pakistan and i write about everything from "interesting" things to all the experience, observation, feelings etc

I use to have a diary but later i throw them away
coz where i put all the diary's.
Jaga naee hai.
Aap logo apne diary kahaan rakhte ho?

Nilu.

No, I have nothing of the sort. Nor will I start it ever again.

However, there will be a book of life in my family with a photo album. Its a neat lil idea. The book shows what the person was, who they married, what education they got and the rest is history that goes into the grave.

diaries and me... oopz we just don't go along, I tried couple of times to keep a diary, but then I realized somehow or other I was unable to write what I wanted to, so I just gave up and started talking to myself rather than writing it down. hehe!!

I do remember a scrap book in 10th grade when all of my classfellows were crazy about that and yes we all had one... I dunno where did it go.. but now since I am curious about my thoughts at that time, Inshallah I am gonna look for it when I 'll visit Pakistan next time :-)

Nadia: if possible do share your bachpan ki diary, that would be a fun and cute as well!!

CocoNut, oh i see.
i love the idea of the family-history book. Have been thinking of doing that for my family. i think it's a wonderful idea especially if you can pass it along to the next generation and they get to know who their great-great-great grandparents were.

Lajawab, i know precisely what you are talking about... the 'scrap books' were VERY MUCH in fashion in Abu Dhabi. On one side of the journal/book, you stuck pictures - like for example, if the question was, "Who is your favourite actor?" you would stick pictures of different actors on the left-hand side. If the question was, "What's your favourite animal?" then you'd stick the left-hand side with all sorts of pictures of diverse animals. All the responses from your classmates/friends had to go on the correct lines in each page. haha the coolest person in the class was always the one with the coolest, thickest scrap book:D

Nilu, i keep most of mine in my closet. Sometimes they're on my desk, sometimes on my bed. i dunno, 80% of the time i am not worried that someone's going to read them although the stuff in them is extremely private.

Tanhayaan and Gemini the Great, haha:D Okay, the diary entries sound really childish, but remember i was just six years old :o

You know what the funny thing is, i have a sucky memory but i actually remember this day - it's literally the second page from my diary, in early 1987, a few months before i turned seven:

Here's what it says incase you can't read my handwriting:D "First my mother is gone to the dentist, then second, my father is gone to the bank. Then I and my two sisters are alone. We telephoned to them and they said that you can play with the Lego and Duplo. So we played then we didn't want to play so [my sisters] were watching tv and I was playing with my purse. So father and mummy came and we"

This one's a few months later from the above:

The "dessert" is supposed to be 'desert'. It took two hours through a desert between Abu Dhabi and Dubai (back in the 80s); today it takes less than half that time and you don't see a single camel on the highway... which was unheard of back then because the camels used to come right on the roads. Shama Auntie was one of my Ammi's closest friends in those days and we were going to visit her (she lived in Dubai, we lived in Abu Dhabi).

This one’s dated 17 January 1991, when i was ten years old. haha i sound so stupid in this one!! :hehe: It was the day that the US attacked Iraq for the invasion of Kuwait. The “George Bush” i am referring to is obviously Bush senior, not the current one. i remember this day as well, very clearly. The US-invasion news broke out in Abu Dhabi early morning, around 4-5 am. i remember my dad lying upright in bed, with a transistor radio in his hands, just listening to BBC. Ammi was sitting next to him, and they were whispering quietly. All schools/offices etc had been closed; we used to live in a skyscraper with a good view of the surrounding area - everything was closed, lights off, and it was really really dark. At that time, the media inundated us with reports that Saddam Hussein would release chemical gas - so that’s what i was talking about in this entry:

It’s kindof hard to read my messed-up handwriting above, so please let me know if anything needs to be clarified.
