My Feudal Lord

Who has read this book?

What was the reason behind its popularity?

Is it inspired from some work in west, as it was totally against what has been written in east prior to this book.

My Feudal Lord

Do you mean the one written by Tehmina Durrani, about her marriage to Mustafa Khar? I have read this book, twice actually. The reason for it’s popularity…sensationalism. People thrive on the the gossip, stories, details and rumors of high profile marriage and divorced of politicians and celebrities :hehe:

Tehmina did not disappoint. The book was chock full of intimate and gory details from her perspective of their marriage and split. The book was given to me by my sister, and not knowing anything about either of these two individuals prior to reading the book, I found it fascinating lol.

Re: My Feudal Lord

yes the same written by Mrs Tehmina Shahbaz Sharif about her marriage with Mustafa Khar.

Is this book by any chance inspired of any work in west?

My Feudal Lord

Mmmm…I don’t think so. It’s a personal memoir written by Tehmina. Memoirs are quite common in the west, many public figures write the stories of their lives…I don’t think My Feudal Lord was inspired by any particular Western book. Are you saying that it’s not heard of or common for a public figure to write such a personal book on Pakistan? :hmmm:

Re: My Feudal Lord

I mean this must have been a controversial book for its time and it introduced a new style of writing in our society. Before her, writings of Ismat Chugtai were considered bold, but if we compare work of Ismat Chugtai and this book, there is no comparison. May be the work is more explicit than Saadat Hasan Manto's short stories at some places.

Tehmina belongs to upper class and she might have been inspired from western literature.

Re: My Feudal Lord

Yes, from what I understand, it was quite controversial. So in that respect, you're probably correct in that Tehmina's upper class upbringing/status and exposure to Western culture and books probably did give her idea/guts to pen her memoir.

Re: My Feudal Lord

Hmmm.. I've got this book but never gotten round to reading it..

Re: My Feudal Lord

I thought it was a great gossip novel. How true it is not sure but omg.

Re: My Feudal Lord

Same here! How true it is, Allah jaanay, but damn, it didn't disappoint on the juicy gossip and shock factor!
