My fascination of Locomotives...

I can’t do anything about this, It compels me

This machine is extra-ordinary and keeps me spellbound for a while. Looking at an engine of a train comming from distnce, blowing whistle… moving on railway track is unique sight.
There is this Railway station near my office, I feel this urge to go there on friday (during extended lunch break). I sit there at platform and wait for the train…although I don’t have to go anywhere… the station being the second or third Station of the city, remains deserted mostly. Few people are there, even fewer are the passenger waiting for the train.

What i like about this train is the ‘Shock-absorbers’ They absorb the shock of thousands of pounds and they move up and down in a rhythm, not by inches but by feet. The last time i travelled by train, i specially tried to feel the swing like movement in the compartment. It is so much soothing. The compartment continiously moves up and down… It feels like it is floating, gives your body a relaxed feeling… sometinme I used to go and stand in the doors (mostly open in economy class compartments) and there you can also feel this swinging motion with view and fragrance of crops in the fields, ever changing scenery.

Back at platform, when the train stops briefly, there are all kind of passengers.. some tired, some sleepy, some amazed, some feeling hungry, children crying or laughing. Elders step down from the train to find someting to eat. Time is short they know that the stop over is hardly five minutes long, most people don’t even bother to step out, cause they know the main station (the destination) is hardly 15 minute away …

And then driver blows whistle, the flag is green. Every one get into the train and it moves forward, leaving me sitting there. The hustle and bustle is over. I walk back to my office with a content face.

Re: My fascination of Locomotives…

Hmm.. you forgot to mention the little kids selling boil anday and chai.. no wait maybe thats only early in the morning. Last time i travelled by train was from Karachi to Dadu to spend winter vacations with my khala some 12 years ago. I was (still am) a malang so i travelled the whole way in a t-shirt and jeans. When i got there everyone made such a big deal out of it kay itni thand may larka banyaan may safar kar raha haiy! I thought that was very rude since it was my favourite t-shirt and they had the nerve to call it a banyaan :grumpy: Anyway it was the talk of the town for next 2 days. Saaday log

Kher i do share a similar fascination but for airplanes instead. How these huge beasts are able to fly.. like yeah its all physics but still its not far from the stuff folklore is made of (flying carpets and all). There is an area near the airport where you can see planes taking off and landing up close. People often go there and have picnics while watching planes!
