My experience of pk wedding preparations

ASA all,

iVe just come back from my quick trip to pk-lahore, for two weeks. i had to prepare for my wedding inshAllah for April which will be in Lahore.

These are the following things i had to get done:
Halls, Cards, Makeup, Clothes, Jewellery

First of all, ive already got my bridal dress froma boutique called Silons in Birmingham Uk, which was made last year…am glad it was one less headache, even though cost is more.

I had to get Hall booked, my requirements is to have a segregated wedding, well try my best to, i am not comfortable with the fact i will be on a stageall dolled up and have all sorts of men peering, most of which i might not even know, and half who would be from gaon. hence i really truly had to put my foot down and find two halls, one for women andone for men.
this was difficult as nowadays even though its pk-muslim country, the weddings are mixed. anyway, I have booked two halls in Joha town, nice, simple, but well maintained. there are may many many halls in lahore, i advise that you do one local to you or in central-liberty. i didnt go PC as ive heard from someone experienceing that if food runs out due to under estimate of guests thats it, you get nothing. if food finishees it finishes. where as other places i went to they say as kitchen is on site, they need 30 mins to make it. i wanted a marquee too, but was advised in month of april its going to be hot plus there are more liekly to be aanddhiya…plus after checking out prices for ac units to be installed in marquee and the fact how my family will be flying out from uk, i opted to choose a hall for the wedding, although ive always dreamnt wanted a marque. there are a few other nice halls, such as saphire hll and qsrenoor in liberty. i went to mughale azam, it was nice from the outside inside was ok too,but ceilings too low, too cramped feeling, plus toilets smelt abit and its awefully busy…ie with 5 halls expect a wedding in each hall…

next headache was jewellery, went to a couple of jewellers in ichara, that my khala knew about, i only had to buy one set for the wedding day, it was difficult, as all designs looked the same, in the end i went to hanif jewellers, whcih had nice stuff, ordered a set from there was advertised in magazines too. ive been fussy with the jewellery since, i cant wear traditional gold typical heavy sets, hence needed something abit more spread out, and lighter too…

next make-up, which was my most biggest concern, i went to mightys bridal salon, a girl was being don at the time. i went in, a girl at the desk was sitting there, asked a few questions, and got responses that were very limited, she had big attitude problem, anyway i kept trying to ask questions, smiling etc…but she really was nnot very friendly at all, started speaking to another girl there , a cousin of the bride who was getting done, who was also going to get married in april. once i started speaking in english and to the girl next to me, the girl at the desk slowly became abit more friendly…anyway makeup of the bride was done ery nicely, basically what happens is she got a assistant package of 15,000 ruppees, and the owner came in and fixed the lipstick shade and gave final touches on eyes etc. which was all fine. good make-up, my aunt said it wasnt anything wow…but still it was nice. she was pretty anyway! anyway then came the turn of the duppatta setting and hair style…
even if you get an owner package the assistant does hair and duppatta setting…when it came to the turn of hair and duppata…rubbish…the heair was messy, just because hair is hidde doesnt mean it has to be messy, it was a simple swiss roll but not neat at all. when it came to duppata…they codnt set it all, started making excuses saying its fine etc…when clearly the bride was worried and so was her cousin and we were too…the bride got distressed too…poor girl.the duppata wasnt that heavy as they were making out…anyway the assistant who was also the girl behind the desk was doing the dress duppatat setting…the owner was not there…she only comes in for final touches or makeup then shoots off…im nto happy about this…and it really put me off. also whilst looking thru photos i asked which are owner and which are assistant and she said we dont tell that…work it out for yourself…!

so i went to madeehas, very welcoming…! a relief…i had loads of questions and the girl was so poltie and helpfull…i looked thru the album all marked which had whos makeup artists work…siffat has a very tradional look, for eyes and madeehas has a softer touch,…which was really nice, they had pictures of before and after of real brides and models. i relal liked it so ibooked it Alhumdolillah. madeehasdoesnt do a trial but a consultation a couple of weeks before, so one can ask more questions…which im looking forward too…as im hoping she will tell me what lipstick shades to get so that i can go buy it as im so scared that my lipstick will come off as i dont know wot i do but my lipstick really comes off quickly even strong ones!

oki next was cards, cards was easy…in anarkali i went to a few shops, and chose them, it takes about 4-5 days to prit, mine havent been printed yet but ive placed an order.

now i think i went on wrong time for clothes, as muharram was about to start the weddings were ending…the styles were getting old…hardly much left in fortress for ready made suits, so i just gave suits for embroidery in liberty liberty market at the back…very nice…just look for the stuff you like an place your order…one problem i had was that styles for this summer is about to change…long kameezes are back in fashion!! infact i went to one boutique near liberty, on m m alam road, inside a plaza, not pace, another one…there were two boutiques on 2 nd floor, hardly many shops there anyway,…they had long kameez like jacketss, with churidar pyjama underneath looked so nice…long kameez below the knee or knee length is in this summer…

also one more thing abot jewellery i didnt get a tikka or jhoomer and in anarkali aa few shops they make artificial stuff, give them a design and they can make it…so thats what will be happening with me…but if you want sumthign artificial and different i suggest kyles in uk is good…this sort of stuff is not in lahore…not that i saw.

any more questions email me!

How nice of you to share! Thanks purplerose

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

Hi :)

Thanks for sharing.. i m in pak these days aswell and preparing for my wedding which is going to be in Canada around sept-oct insha-Allah. havent chosen my bridal dress but still going through some bridal magazines. my biggest concern is that since i m not getting married in pak... i cant find any good makeup artist there :( .... i have tons and tons of stuff to do and i m leaving for can in abt 1.5 months :(

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

aman110, theres a few good ladies here- check the "paki bridal makeup in toronto" thread. you'll be fine :)

purplerose- wow! sounds like you got everything done! good job :)
its also really helpful to know long kameezes are back... fashion comes to toronto so late. i hope shirts dont go TOO long- i like the knee length ones.

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

Aman im sure you will find an artist for your makeup that will be just right for you. While its good to take feedback from others you must decide for your self cause we all have different faces and tastes.
SO what kind of dress are you getting for your shadi? Where are you shopping in Pakistan?
My brother in law is getting married in toronto in april and my bhabi to be is currently getting her trials done from a few people (shirley, xpressions, and two mac girls). She decided to wait till her clothes were ready which i think was a wise decision!

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

Groovy i aggree i like the knee and just below the knee shirts- any thing past that doesnt cut it for me- unless its with a churridar but how often does one wear that!

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

about PC its not true, they have very well maintained kitchen may be the largest one on site in almost all the basement of the Hotel, and they do provide sectioned halls for men and women.

they do cater for extra guests and might not even charge for that unless they are double the initial estimates. thats my personal experience for my wedding. and I think they would be more keen to keep their goodwill.

all sorts of halls exists in lahore.

for my part of preparation to share, arrived in Lahore 3 weeks prior to my wedding.
arranged reception hall which was booked already by my father. so no shopping around, just finalised menu with them.

ordered cards, re checked, keep in mind spelling mistakes took couple of visits to congested area like hospital road. due to reprinting and late reciept many friends were missed from invitations.

wedding dresses are not very simple to choose and to get it prepared according to taste, so leave plenty of time for try and retry and choose good one with right references.

jewllary front and dulhan dresses were dealt with my mum and sister, so very slight input from myself apart from collecting dresses from tailors even day before wedding. tailors dont keep due dates specially for the fancy work for ladies. so keep that in mind too.

leave well time before the actuall reception on both days for photo shoots, my first one ran late and many were annoyed with me for being absent from barat. thats not quite possible if the bride is not ready from make up artist, so in my case she had to go alone in her shoot. we had second one on walima day. that was planned well after learning from the first day.

delegate duties to reliable people, this way it works very well. dont let miss even the slight oil thing(we were all at hena function and realised we havent got the oil ;) to mess up my hairs, luckily it wasnt too far from house) mostly these functions are arranged late so you will not have choice to just bump in and buy from the stores.

hope these tips will help to wanna be get married soon people.

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

yes maybe PC has got the facilties but my grandfather did experience of not being served as not enough food was made at the weding he intended. but then i have heard that PC has done rightfully well in other weddings....also not halls that provided two halls were well maintained.... or they didnt have the capacity....

another thing i forgot to mention was furniture...for those looking at furniture for whatever reason should head down to either the kora market in ichara...aw wood materials, its halff the asking price in shops.... amazingly we went into Haroons,....oh my God, please people go there....dont bother taking your purses with you, unless your mega rich as its simple expensive even if one converts from pounds into ruppess!....2 lac for a bliming bed....anyway chen one is very nice for furniture etc....

im actually moving to pk-lahore inshAllah so have been comparing other things as well....such as those fur cushions....much better priced here in london....
and yes i also went al-fateh in liberty...loved it its so cool...and i bought a makeup brush set....i havnt tried it out ye...but seems its good....and lip liners....so cheap...and some real nice ones...

but biggest headache is clothes....such a sstressful thing, im so thankful for Allah that ive not had to stress on that part...

Anyway people if you have any other question leme know////else May Alah help you all to have a stress free smooth wedding , with barakat. Ameen.

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

Salam

Thnx allllot for ur information Purplerose :)
Im also having my wedding in Lahore in April, InshaAllah, and have plans to stay there for 3-4 mounths.
My biggest concern is also THE MAKE UP I really dont want to have that "pan- cake/ white ghost" loook on my wedding day...so I been thinking of either Allenora or Newlook..sona eh ke newlook wale photo shoots bhi karte, anyone know something abt that???
Im going to Pak in March to do my shopping, Insha Allah. I hope Ill mange to buy everything, afterall Lahore is a big city and u should be able to find anything U just have to have money.. and go to the right places.. Im gonna do all my wedding shopping from Liberty, Fortress, Anarkali, Ichra, Ouriga and I have also heard that u can get really nice clothes from a place called rang mahal...
Abt jewellery, well then we have Soha bazaar ,but I dont think I will buy a gold set for my rukhsati lehnga.. artificial set look soooooo mutch better I think...
ohh I have to go now "on " ka phone he ..hehehehe

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

I agree that the biggest headache is clothes thats what everyone notices, how did u go about designing your dress? did they make it according what you asked for? or did u pick a design?? what color did u pick??

Best of luck :)

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

Thanks for sharing Purplerose..it was great for an idea..

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

i thought newlook and allenora do the pancake look no? anyway....when booking just go to the salon, go in the evening, friday saturday or somthing see if you can bump into a bride beign made...thast the best way....

all the shopping places you have listed are the main places, but its still not easy, .....but with preserverance im sure you will be fine.
also try to go to a jewellery shop which you have been recommended....
also artificial jewellery is better here,....i went to anarkali, and i wasnt impressed,...its all the same stuff....but the artificial stuff from here in uk,...such as kyles bees is nicer....finishing is much better....so im debating whether to get an artificial set with jhoomer and tikka, or stick with my real gold set, whichisnt that heavy but has no jhomar tikka...got get matching artificial jhommer tikka with that.....mmm

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

Wsalam ji

Yes I know those r al main places, threfore I will recommend U to go for shopping with anyone who know those places.
Abt beautyparlors... I looked at newlooks website and they seem quite good actually, but I will still do as u say..
And when it comes to jewellery I was thinking to have an artificial set for my rukhsati and gold set for walima, what do u gyes think??? and bye the way Im not from UK but Norway and there is no good varity here... I think in ichra they have some good artificial jewelley shops, and we also have rang mehal.

If u have decided to wear a real gold set for ur rukstati U can just take ur dupatta and set to any shop at rang mehal (soha bazaar) and they will find or make matching jhumar, tikka and that nosething if u want too. My mom did that for my bhabi and they mached reallyyyyyy good...

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

i have only bought couple of dresses to wear after shadi and havent done anything else.. my mom is basicaly doing the main shopping, i have decided what colours i want for shadi’s lehnga, have bought some jewlery but not the main jewlery to wear on the day.. thats it :bummer:

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

Hi can you get artificial jewellery made in Lahore? Or is it just real sona that you can get made and artificial has to be bought as it is..?

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

yep you can get artificial jewellery made in lahore- go to anarkali....a few jewellers are sitting just show them what you want and they will make it for you.

i dont know about liberty, but i didnt come across any artificial shop there? where exactly is it located? or is it the small stall type of shops?

Re: My experience of pk wedding preparations

Hi every1!

I'll like to tell my "wedding story" as well!
I got married about 1 year ago. My wedding was in december and I went to PK with my mom in October. Celebrated Eid and started off with the shopping.
Before going to PK I did a lot of research on bridal dresses etc. I knew that I didn't want to wear RED, instead I chose for PINK (Rani Pink).
I already knew a designer in Lahore (the same one who designed my engagement outfit) and I knew I'd go to him as I was very happy with his previous designs.
So I went to him as soon as I got there and finalized my wedding lehenga (colour, design etc). After that I had to book for my make up. A friend of mine told me about MADEEHAS, she had her make up done and it was so beautifull!! I was looking for a 'natural' look and my friend told me then I should go to MADEEHAS. My engament make up was done by DEPILEX and was very nice, but heavy... For my baraat I was looking towards a natural look. So, I went up there and yup they were very nice and I loved their set up! When I came in for my make up, they received me, told me to have a seat, asked me if I wanted to have something to drink (they even have sandwiches for hungry brides!). It was a great feeling. And the make up was very natural, exactly as I wanted it to be, so overall I was glad I made a good choice. I also did my couple photo shoot by DEEVEES. OMG they are so professional! I love their style!!

My barat was held at an open ground, which was decorated beautifully with lights and flowers and colours. My wedding dress (baraat) was a double lehenga with mostly Rani Pink with a touch of green and multi colour stones and firozi embroidery. I also had this "crown embroidery" on my dupatta. I loved it!

My walima was held at MUGHAL-E-AZAM in Lahore, which is a beautiful hall. On my walima I wore a baby pink/yellow gharara with silver/multi colour salma sitara. LOVELY! My make up was done by DEPILEX and everyone told me I was looking like Aish in Devdas... lol

Anyway I had a dream wedding and I still think and talk about it with everyone.

Any other experiences?
