My exam mark =(

I had an exam recently and after the exam, I thought I did fairly good on it. I went to get my mark on Friday, and my exam mark was 64%!!!

My mark went down to 80% and I was extremely upset. I still cannot figure out how I got such a low mark. At that time, I was really angry & upset and didn’t want to talk to the teacher about it. I knew I’d end up saying something that I’d regret later on, so I left it and went.

Mind you, prior to the exam, my mark was 81% - I approached the teacher about this and it turns out, she didn’t put in my marks for a lot of assignments, hence it was so low. Considering my exam is worth 30%, I assume she DID put the marks in before the exam… making my mark around 87%.

So she could have either:

a) Not have put in the marks at all. Mark stays at 81, after the exam, felt bad (highly doubt it) and decreased it by 1% only.

b) DID insert the marks prior to the exam, making my mark around 87%, mark decreased to 80% after exam.

But I don’t understand HOW I got 64% on the exam. I don’t think it was marked fairly. Mind you, when I told her to insert the marks that she missed, she was very uncooperative about it. This whole semester, whenever anyone in my class needed help, she was very rude about it. Not helpful at all. It took a lot of courage to go up to her and tell her that she missed those marks :S She’s very intimidating.

Teachers are there to help you - not to scare you off to the point where you can’t even ask questions. I didn’t want to approach her about this because I knew she wasn’t going to be helpful about it at all, like in the past. She’d take it personally and not do anything about it. -_-

I scheduled an appointment with the vice-principal of our school to explain the situation. I want my exam to be re-marked by another teacher in the department. I also want a transcript of all my marks so I know which marks got inserted & which didn’t.

I don’t have any intention to cause harm to my teacher - this is a matter of marks, and this is my last year so my marks really matter. If I weren’t in my last year, I would have ignored it but this mark is going to bring my average down and then I might not get into the program I want to get into for university =(

I don’t want to hurt my teacher in any way, I just want this matter to be sorted out.

What should I tell the vice principal? &how can I word myself so that she doesn’t get offended?

Re: My exam mark =(

Well you have every right to get a detailed plan of how she calculated your marks, teachers are human beings and hence prone to making such mistakes. Since your earlier average was good, i am sure the vp wouldn't have an issue with your concern since it is a huge drop.

Re: My exam mark =(

64% in the UK is a 2:1 at degree level...equivalent to a B - most people are very happy to get that haha

Re: My exam mark =(

You should speak to the teacher first. Going around her is going to make her approach worse. If you are uncomfortable meeting with her alone, contact a counselor/adviser to sit in on that meeting. If that is not an option, contact an administrator or parent.

How old are you? Where are you located?

Re: My exam mark =(

^ Thanks. I think I should do that too. I'll cancel my appointment with the vice-principal and contact my counsellor instead. I'm 18 years old from Ontario, Canada.

Re: My exam mark =(

^ No problem (I'm a HS teacher in the US)

Re: My exam mark =(

Another bit of advice, don't go in right away nitpicking about numbers and averages. Make it about how you misinterpreted how well you had done, what you're concerned about, and ask for help in improving. That will keep her from getting defensive. Once you've discussed that, you can ask about the average.
