OK, I had mentioned in another thread over here about my strange chili pepper plant. So here I am posting it’s pictures for you all to see. I still do not know what kind of a chili it actually is, I just bought the plant as it looked strange to me - And since I am a collector of strange plants, I planted in my home!
The chili usually grows to about an inch in length. Color of the flower and the young chili is always purple, but when it matures (in about a week to 10 days) - It becomes a blazing red bomb! It also turns a greenish-brown between transition, but that state only lasts for a day. So it’s mostly purple, which quickly jumps to red.
Only the new leaves of the plant are green. But as they too get bigger, they also turn purple. This plant is no bigger then 2 and a half feet, and so can easily grow in a medium size pot. But if potted, it required more water (otherwise the leaves start to curl up).
Taste wise it is very hot, very very hot… Just one (cut up very finely) spread evenly over a giant 12 inch pizza is enough to make your eyes water for hours!!! But the taste is so amazing that almost everyone who eats my pizza, always remembers it with fondness. This chili surprisingly is also very effective when someone is trying to combat the common cold (it really has a mysterious way of clearing the nose and throat in a few minutes)!
One thing that you have to be VERY careful about is that when using it for food, always wear cloves. Because if the inside juices ever get on your fingers, then you will (even if you had washed your hands with soap a few times) get a very nasty surprise when you rub your eyes accidentally…
Shahbaz sahab, very nice post .. Really liked your pictures.. Also the color of flower is very adorable. Truly speaking I have never seen such type of chilli but by judging your post, I can assume that it is a very superior type of chilli. How many times you can harvest a plant or is it just one time harvest and requires re-plantation next season?
Is there any possibility for me to get the seeds of this secret plant? :)
Sure, in a few weeks I'll be planting it's seeds (as right now I have got only one plant). Anyway it is a very robust plant, just requires some water at a constant rate. I have had it for almost 2 years now, and it's so far given me about 4 to 9 chilies a week.
When I have more of it's kind (which shouldn't take long), then yes, I can easily let you have some. That way if say for some accident my plant is ever destroyed, I still will have one more person out there from whom I can get some more seeds in the future!
:)
I of course had planned to propagate this plant last year, but greed got the better of me - So instead of planting the chilies, I ended up eating them all! But this season I am definitely going to plant more of this!
Yes I think you've got it! Well done I say! :)
I was wondering about this for a long time.
I guess I used the wrong keywords in google to look it up...
Another Chili plant that I’ve got is the Holiday Cheer. It is a short plant (never growing above 18 inches). Funny thing is that these chilies are totally round, and are not hot at all. Plus they are full of water.
The original plant that I had of it died last year (due to a very bad mealybug attack). But I had it’s seeds. So now I have 2 more plants of it. They don’t have any chilies in them yet, when they do then I will surly upload some pictures for you all to see. In the meantime, this picture is from last year.
One thing to note here is that all the plant nurseries NEVER tell you the correct name of the plant - As they don’t want you to find it on your own. So they always give it a bogus name. So from google I discovered that it was actually called Holiday Cheer. Otherwise had I kept on believing what the nursery people were telling me, and so I’d still be calling this Brazilian Chilies…
Thanks, but other then chilies I have a few more colorful stuff in my garden. See this picture for example - This is called Butterfly Pea, it a very beautiful climbing vine that gives these bright blue flowers all throughout the summer months. It’s actually a very cheap and somewhat drought resistant local wild plant. But what’s more amazing is that this plant seems to attract a lot of hummingbirds!
Unfortunately I till this day am unable to photograph one, as those little birds quickly fly away the moment they see me with a camera. Anyway this picture is from last year.
Nice picture Shahbaz sahab. The flowers look very big & healthy.. When I was a kid, our neighbors had this plant in their house and it got so big that a large portion of it crawled into our house but we didn't mind it at all :D The flowers were simply very adorable. But it was removed by new people who came in the neighborhood couple of years later :(
Thanks and Nice idea :) but most people don't seem to be interested in gardening :( as you can see in Household section, most threads are only about cooking.

Unfortunately, that seems to be true... But that shouldn't stop you and me! :D
