My career would be over in 6 months: Inzamam

By Partha Rudra

Colombo, September 13, 2002

Inzamam ul-Haq will be out of action for the Pakistan-Australia series. Reason for this that he has to undergo a surgery on his left heel Inzamam confirming the fact stated, “My body is in absolutely bad shape. If I don’t take care immediately my cricket career can well be over in six months.”

Inzamam underwent a surgery on his left knee a year back. He bounced back into the game very strongly and in the month of May 2002 he scored 329 against New Zealand, which turned out to be 10th highest score by a batsman in Test cricket.

But with the passing of time, he has once again started developing a similar problem in his right knee. To make matters worse, he is undergoing pain at the lower portion of the spinal cord. The left heel is the icing on the cake.

Inzamam is pretty frustrated with the condition. “Injury has taken away lot of my cricket. I really don’t know what is the answer to all these problem. But one thing I know for sure that if I try to carry on forcefully, along with these injuries, I will not be back with a cricket bat on the ground within six months.”

A specialist from Australia is flying in to Colombo within a week’s time. He will address Inzamam’s problems and will advise accordingly. The operation on the left ankle is inevitable. With the World Cup round the corner in February 2003, will it not be a problem to make a comeback?

Inzamam is confident as he says, “We will be playing seven one-dayers against South Africa just before the World Cup. I think that would be good practice before the World Cup starts.”

But why is he moving around with the team, specially when he has not been playing for a long time. Inzamam was quick to reply. "Dennis Waight, our physio, is keeping a close watch on me. He is making me do my rounds to at least keep the body in shape.

gr8. this is really bad luck for pakistan. well a good chance for misbah to cement his position in the team.

i was just thinking how would this be as a team for the world cup:

Saeed Anwar
Misbah
Youhana
Inzamam
Younis
Razzaq
Wasim Akram
Rashid Latif/Moin Khan
Waqar Younis
Saqlain
Shoaib

pretty solid batting lineup. all technical batsmen.
however. i would be worried that moving a proved middle order batsmen, Misbah, to the opening position would be a little dangerous.

So the question is who will come in place for Inzi, we need to bring in some solid mid order batsman, Faisal Iqbal or Basit Khan should be considered.

Let the buddhas (esp. Inzi) stay till the end of WC03. I'm sure he'll prove to be one of the vital bats for Pakistan. Our batsmen suck anyway. He's one of the few batsmen left in our team who (at times) helps win the games for us.

Well if his injuries are really that serious then I don't think PCB would even consider putting him on the squad (WC03).

Correct :k:

If Inzi recovers from his injuries, then he should be included in squad for World Cup 2003.
