  1. Chapter: The excellence of love for the sake of Allah and encouraging it, and a man who loves another informing him of that and what he says to him when he informs him

Allah Almighty says, “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those who are with him are fierce to the unbelievers, merciful to one another…” (48:29) to the end of the sura,

and the Almighty says, “Those who were settled in the abode, and in belief, love those who have made hijra to them.” (59:9)

  1. Anas reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Anyone who possesses three attributes will experience the sweetness of belief: that he loves Allah and His Messenger more than anything else; that he loves someone for the sake of Allah alone; and that he hates the idea of reverting to disbelief as much as he would hate being thrown into a fire.” [Agreed upon]…
    …

Now nowhere does it say that we should hate non-muslims or sinners. We should hate the sinful actions for the sake of Allah and we should love other human beings for the sake of Allah.

If you think that we should hate sinners then we should hate ourselves and everyone else because no one is completely sinless.

We will mention only a few of the many hadith and reports of the Companions on this subject. Imam Ahmad reports from Jarir ibn Abdullah that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, made him swear an oath to 'offer counsel to every Muslim and to steer clear of every disbeliever.' (1) Ibn Shayba reports that the Prophet said, "The strongest bond of faith is love for the sake of Allah and enmity for His sake." (2) Ibn Abbas reports that the Prophet said, "The strongest bond of faith is loyalty for the sake of Allah and opposition for His sake, love for the sake of Allah and enmity for His sake." (3)

Ibn Abbas is also reported to have said, "Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, and hates for the sake of Allah, and whoever seals a friendship for His sake, or declares an enmity for His sake, will receive, because of this, the protection of Allah. No one may taste true faith except by this, even if his prayers and fasts are many. People have come to build their relationships around the concerns of the world, but it will not benefit them in any way." (4)
