I am an Indian Hindu. Ever since my childhood, i have been anxious about God and Religion. Recently, a meeting with a Sufi has left me wondering. I would like to share the same with all.
The incident happened last Saturday and below is from my diary in toto.
Today morning, i met a Sufi darwesh. The meeting has simply left me wondering. I would like to share the meeting with all.
I offered him some money. He saw Bhagwat Gita on my bed(while reading it yesterday night, I slept) and started discussion. Soon the discussion drifted to - why are there so many religions when everyone says there is just one God.
He took some water and scribbled on the floor:

ONE
Then he asked me, which of these is bigger in value.
Before i could answer, he explained it himself. His answer was simply out-standing:
For a student of pure English(one who doesn’t know a bit of Maths), they are completely different - no similarities. Even for master of Maths, if he doesn’t understand the essence of question, he will be confused. For a student who knows even a bit of Mathematics and understands the essence of the question, they are the same.
Likewise, he told - for one who is completely absorbed in Worldly affairs - the religions are different - no similarity; for one who is seemingly very spiritual(ritualistically) but doesn’t understand the essence of religion - the existence of so many religions is confusing; for one who is even a bit spiritual and understands the essence of the religion, they are the same.
I was left mesmerized-such simple explanation. Meanwhile, I was getting late for my 8:45 bus and left.
I missed a chance to learn something about Quran ,Islam and spirituality. I still can’t understand why didn’t I leave the bus and continue my discussion.
