my 5 months old love watching TV

my daughter 5 months (adjusted age 3 months) loves watching tv. no matter in which direction she is lying she will manage to turn her head towards the tv. during dinner time she has to sit on my lap and watch tv otherwise I cannot eat. she sometimes cry alot just to make her sit on lap so that she can watch tv.

i want to change her habit i mean she is just 5 months old and if i switch off tv or pick her up she starts crying really hard.

right now its okay but what i feel that it can become a problem as she grows older. I can’t get angry on her she wont understand.

anybody faced similar situation ? :frowning:

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

oh thats not good .. i mean she is hooked already.

mines 6 months does look in that direction but she does not cry if we switch if off.

Having TV in limits is ok .. now u cannot stop kids from watching it but u can limit their time in front of the telly.

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

Theres no doubt in my mind that TV is bad - really bad - for kids. I've seen the negative effects on my boys. I fell into the trap too.

It was wonderful when we were in the midst of all the feeding issues with my eldest. The only way to get him to eat was play a movie, press "pause" then tell him to take a bite. When he did, he'd get about 20 seconds more of the movie.

Otherwise, it has never had any positive effects other than to keep them quiet for a while. It screws up their attention span, it prevents them from developing creative play skills, it prevents them from interacting with others.

We also made a huge mistake in allowing a family member to gift the boys a wii. My eldest gets so obsessed with it that he has accidents - he forgets to go potty beccause he's too deeply zoned out in his games.

We've put strict limits now and the positive effects are numerous.

My advice - its a bad bad habit so nip it in the bud before it gets outta control!!

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

how about you replace tv with children's music or light instrumental music or Qirat, etc. Also make sure they are not on 24/7 but only for little bit. You should have some time where you sit talk with her, read a book, go outside for a stroller walk, etc.

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

It’s hard when you’re also a tv addict…
:bummer:

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

I don't think at this age she really understands what TV is. She is probably attracted to sounds and movements, colors etc. I don't see that as a problem. Just switch it off and play with her.

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

Do you realize it can stunt her mental growth. Babies who watch a lot of tv tend to talk later than normal and have a lower IQ.
I totally agree with spiral. She's too young. She'll cry once or twice but will be ok in a day or two.
Is your tv on all day? While you r doing ur chores etc? If yes, you'll have to stop that.

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

yes thats what I have been trying to do. I try to talk with her whenever she wants to see the tv. she replies back and it has turned out to be a lovely exercise :jano:

she also loves looking out side the window of car. off course the glasses are always up. but we can enjoy a nice 20-45 mins drive with her if she is sitting on my lap and looking outside.

i think she is a very shararti bachi:@:

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

Research shows even just having the T.V on in the background is bad.

I agree with APA - No T.V till 2 and maybe 1/2 - 1 hour of screen time a day at the max after that.

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

What did you mean when you said adjusted age?

Re: my 5 months old love watching TV

she will grow out of it cuz at this age.. its just movements and sounds like someone else mentioned.. ure worried bout ure 5 month old? my TWO month old used to watch it.. we would turn him away from teh tv but man for a 2 monht old, his neck muscles were way too strrong and he would force his head back to teh tv! we would play with him facing us and again, he would inch his face away from ours and move it towards the tv.. in the end we just started to take him out of the lounge (we live with our in laws), or if it were just us, we would turn the tv off.

i was worried like you, but now that he is an 11 month old, he has absolutely no intrest in tv... i try to be a bad mommy and gain some time by having him watch some of it but nopes.. brain activity says empty the dvd cabinet.

who knows. maybe u do have a naughty bachi on ure hands :D
