Re: MUST MUST Haves and their quantities

No, I didn't switch until 2.5-3 months, but you can start them from birth on those.

atuomme: congrats on the baby... and i can understand ure worry about not buying too much as you will have to lug it with you back home or feel sad over leaving stuff behind that u have spent money on

first time parents do go crazy buyin stuff for their first born and rightfully so.. but its harder when you have space issue

ok

you dont need anything for sleeping ... just put baby with u and mr on the floor on a mattress. first time parents always worry bout crushing their babies , like i literally did, and u just dont get sleep cuz ure always worried. u could get a bassinet etc but why waste the money? u can even ut the baby on the mattress and mr can sleep on the bed with you. its not pakistan where there are rodents running about

clothing wise.. everyone has given great suggestions... dont buy too much! and they are soo easily bought that mr can easily go and pick up a few as teh baby grows... initially, a 5 pack of newborn sized full suits wil suffice... once the baby comes, depending on how big or small it is, go from there. remmeber its gonna be summer and summers in canada are HOT... so u dont need blankets.. not heavy ones for sure. a fleece sheet will do, so buy a triple pack. i had so many blankets thinking babies need warmth but i wasted them all cuz my son slept with nothing on cept a single layer of clothing!

diapers: they give you some at the hospital.. again, judging by ure baby's height and weight, u can easily get diapers on teh way back from teh hospital. dont have to stock up. i didnt. my son never wore newborn diapers even though he was a full term baby.. he immediately started wearing size 1's... cuz he was tall.

small things liek nail clippers sampoo etc... again, easily picked up whilst grocery shopping. there is this pack my mil got me from canada.. by safety 1st.. it had EVERYTHING in it.. its a whole kit with nail clippers, files, nasal bulb, thermometer etc... try to buy something like that so u dont have to buy everything sep..

wash and wipes.... dont know what will suit ure baby and honestly, a newborn doesnt need all taht much cleaning... so buy a small bottle for now.. they dont need sep shampoo and body wash.. one thign suffices...

get 2 bath towels for the baby... and atleast 6 hand towels...

get a changing sheet in plastic so just incase the baby has an accident whilst changing, they do it on the plastic rather than ure bed.. etc

dont bother buying a changing table etc.. that plastic sheet will do for now.

i wouldnt bother buyign a bath tub either cuz i honestly found it easier to handle the baby in the sink than breaking my back holding its neck , head and body whilst hoping i had an 8th hand to pour some soap onto the sponge and have my 9th hand rub it on!
sinks in canada are big enough to hold a newborn...

feeding wise: just buy one bottle.. they are all the same.. just make sure its bpa free if its plastic.. if glass, well any will do.. i had both.. but i quickly moved up from glass to plastic cuz man i was always worried after every fall that it may have chipped but that chip is invisible to the naked eye.. happens.
its the nipple taht is the hard part but again.. not impossible.. buy an avent bottle and go from there.
pump, soothers, nipples etc.. all can be bought in a minute... my husband ran to the pharmacy to pick up an electric pump for me cuz our son was just refusing to suck so i had to pump and give him milk... u wont know before hand if u will run into issues with breastfeeding so no use buying stuff 'just incase'...

what else .. what else..

hmm...

i'll come back if i remember anything else :D

oh wait i just did.. haha

u will need a place to let the baby's stuff dry.. dont put them in the dryer !!!

u can get that peg system .. its circular with a clip at the top u can hang anywhere, washroom etc and its got multpile pegs hanging from it... just hang there.. a newborns stuff is so puny that it keeps falling off the hanging lines so thats what i got and just put in the washroom.

dont forget a rashcream too... though if u clean properly at every diaper change and put a bit of oil down there , i gurantee a rash free baby forever.. my son mashallah has never gotten a rash in his 11 months on earth... any oil will do... honestly.. i dont buy baby oil.. just use olive oil.. its the best!

Re: MUST MUST Haves and their quantities

Khawateen, do you mean we should apply oil after every nappy change, or just once a day or so?

Every nappy change. Oil acts as a barrier between the pee and skin so irritation is minimal. And frequent nappy changes please. Dont be stingy on diapers. Or it will come at the expense of a red bottomed baby and not so pleased you. Im talking every 2 hours unless baby is asleep. Once they start solids and decrease liquid intake such as bottle feeding, you may only have to change every 4 hours depending on how much your baby pees.

u need breastfeeding cream and the breast pads for yourself .. i used Lanisoh and it is great......u may wanna do your research on breast pumps as well just in case if you need it later.
