Muslims promoting Christmas in England

This is nice to hear. Muslims are promoting Christmas in England. I hope this leads to better relations between both religions.

LONDON (Reuters) - Christian and Muslim Britons joined forces on Monday to tell city officials to stop taking the Christianity out of Christmas, warning them that this fueled right-wing extremism.

They attacked local authorities which used titles like “Winterval” for their Christmas celebrations and avoided using Christian symbols in case they offended minority groups, especially Muslims and Hindus.

The question of how best to integrate Muslims into European society, which has Christian roots but is increasingly secular, has become a burning issue, with Britain playing its part in the debate after years of promoting multiculturalism.

The Christian Muslim Forum, set up by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, the spiritual head of the Church of England, complained that taking the Christian message out of Christmas played into the hands of right-wing extremists who then accused Muslims of undermining Britain’s Christian culture.

“The desire to secularize religious festivals is in itself offensive to both our communities,” said Dr Ataullah Siddiqui, vice chairman of the forum.

Anglican Bishop of Bolton David Gillett said that when local authorities rename Christmas so as not to offend other religions, their stance “will tend to backfire badly on the Muslim community in particular.”

“We are concerned that those approaches which are based on anti-religious philosophies or a fear of religion are causing alienation in a wide variety of communities and fanning the growth of extremism,” said Gillett, the forum chairman.

“Sadly it is they (Muslims) who get the blame for something they are not saying. And after all, the Koran speaks with honor about Jesus and tells of his birth to Mary, a virgin,” he added.

The threat of radical Islam, rammed home by last year’s London bombings, has led Britain to rethink its traditionally tolerant attitude to ethnic minorities.

The government has launched a debate on whether the policy of not imposing a single British identity on immigrants, and instead promoting multiculturalism, has led to the segregation of minority communities.

The London bombings in July last year prompted much soul-searching over what led four young Muslim Britons to become suicide bombers and kill 52 people.

Many experts fear the focus on Islam could backfire if Britain’s 1.8 million Muslims feel they are under attack.

Religious controversies have often made frontpage news in British papers this year, including Muslim protests over cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad,
Pope Benedict’s remarks about Islam and the debate over Muslim women wearing full veils.

Bishop Gillett said: “Following the many controversies through which my Muslim friends have gone this year … I am particularly conscious of wanting to say to them in my Christmas cards and in person – May the peace and blessing of God be with you this Christmas.”

M2K, I think they are encouraging full expression of the Christian holiday, and not actually promoting it, there is a difference. Should lead to better relations.

Re: Muslims promoting Christmas in England

Europeans go all out to be secular... I think the Americans have hit a better balance though. Religion should be displayed openly and without fear, it just shouldnt be imposed...

Re: Muslims promoting Christmas in England

If Europeans want to go secular that's fine..but to use the excuse that they don't want to offend Muslims isn't, because then Muslims get the blame when most Muslims couldnt give a toss whether Europe goes secular or it goes the religion route. There will always be some attention seeking religious nut that makes an issue out of these non issues, not realizing that there is more at stake than his semi literate ego.

whaa?

Re: Muslims promoting Christmas in England

you need to be in touch with British current affairs to know what I'm talking about.

Re: Muslims promoting Christmas in England

I remember in the late 1990's; a muslim group sued new york city because there was a huge christmas tree at Penn train stattion. They said it offended their religion and to this day there are no Christmas trees in Penn Station.

Re: Muslims promoting Christmas in England

In chicago public displays for all faiths have been going on downtown for years. the groups support each other and their sentiments.

I think this is a good move and good show of support by muslim groups, we should have more of this sort of cooperation.

btw kataria, majority of religious symbolism that gets removed from public places is due to actions of other groups whose agenda is to really focus on the seperation fo church and state.

Re: Muslims promoting Christmas in England

Why shouldn't they take the "Christianity" out of Christmas? These Christmas rituals have nothing to do with Christianity.

Re: Muslims promoting Christmas in England

Could it be political/diplomatic move so Muslim community also gets favor-returned on their issues? :D

Re: Muslims promoting Christmas in England

I would generally appreciate if they promote Islam in its true sense by being genuine Muslim and not let some extremists dictate our mindset; rest will take care of itself.

Re: Muslims promoting Christmas in England

Muslims couldn’t care less whether they celebrate Christmas or not, we’ve never complained about anything, fair enough we wont partake in festivals that belong to other faiths but we respect their right to be able to practice them, Christians celebrating Christmas doesn’t offend us, the only thing which offends us is the bombing of our brethren under false pretences with greedy motives and arresting innocent Muslims in this country under charges of terrorism without solid proof and demonising us in every forum and alienating us from the rest of society, I think moves like this are just another way of creating hatred towards us and hurrying our ultimate en masse deportation.

Most Britons (even some church going ones) are secular atheists so if they opt for a secular name for Christmas such as Winterval (festival of winter) then more power to them as long as they don’t drag us into it, Christmas has long lost it’s Christianess because the majority of the people in this country are not Christians except in paper and they haven’t done anything Christian at Christmas for decades, it’s not about going to mass or nativity scenes anymore rather it’s about the fancy Christmas tree and Father Winterval. Around this time last year we had Christmas carols on at work and everyone was singing along fine until the religious hymns started and every (supposedly Christian) white person in the room started complaining about how “depressing” they were and asked for them to be turned off and the more jolly secular carols put back on instead. The only Christian thing about Christmas is it’s name, once they get rid of that they’ll be right, go ahead do it just don’t drag us into it.

Jingle bells and a very ~* MERRY - WINTERVAL *~ to you all.
