SURAT:** Claiming Terror strikes like in Mumbai cannot take place without local support or contacts, Surat real estate agents and brokers have decided not to rent or sell houses to Muslims. This decision was taken at a meeting last Sunday which was attended by some 300 real estate agents, many of whom responded to SMS invites. They initiated moves to form an association, hoping to complete the process before the month ends.

The Mumbai attacks prompted this meeting in Surat which was rocked by the discovery of bombs across the city after the July 26 serial blasts in Ahmedabad. After the bombs were discovered, activists of Hindu hardline groups had forced Muslims to vacate shops in the Varachha area of Surat — in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, Muslims find it very difficult to rent or buy houses and this has been their experience ever since the 2002 riots.

Defending their move not to do business with Muslims in Surat, New Adajan Rander Road real estate agent Amit Tailor said: “We do business for a fixed rate. I have contacts with 150 estate brokers and we are all inter-linked. We cannot rule out the possibility of local support for terror attacks. Several local people were involved in the blasts in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Jaipur, even the planting of bombs in Surat. We are not saying that all Muslims are terrorists. There are some shops in our area which have been rented out by Muslims. We want to control the percentage.”

Naresh Patel, also an Adajan estate agent, said: “We will convince owners who have rented shops to Muslims to get them vacated. If they don’t do it, they will be responsible if anything happens. We want to control the percentage of Muslims with properties and shops in our areas. All real estate agents and brokers are with us, they have all taken an oath not do business with Muslims.” Praveen Bhalara of Varachha said: “We found that one Tanveer Pathan was arrested by Surat police in connection with the planting of bombs in Varachha. Tanveer used to work in an AC shop in Varachha and was familiar with the area. So we decided that shops should not be sold or given on rent to Muslims as they pose a threat. We don’t want to take a chance. We have even told groups in Varachha not to give jobs to Muslims youths.”

When his comments were sought, Surat Mayor Ranjit Gilitwala, who is also the BJP MLA from Surat East, said though he was not aware of any such decision by real estate agents, he could do very little about it at an official level. For the sake of communal harmony in the city, Gilitwala said, he would call real estate agents and speak to them.

Re: Muslims No Longer Allowed to Buy/Rent Property in Indian City

And what do you expect from a BJP ruled state? lovely dovely mushy mushy Hindu-Muslim pyar vyar?

Re: Muslims No Longer Allowed to Buy/Rent Property in Indian City

I learned that Muslims were not allowed houses in Mumbai long before these attacks, Shabana Aazma and well known bollywood figure and Saif Ali Khan couldn't buy any houses/apartment in Mumbai... so what difference does it make...

Anyway is this applies only on Muslim indians or on the Arab-Muslim Investors as well...

Re: Muslims No Longer Allowed to Buy/Rent Property in Indian City

Shabana Azmi and Saif Ali Khan couldnt buy apartments in Mumbai?
where are they living now, in hotels or in the footpath?

Re: Muslims No Longer Allowed to Buy/Rent Property in Indian City

another riot brewing

Re: Muslims No Longer Allowed to Buy/Rent Property in Indian City

^^ I don't know that, they said this on a talk show, where Javaid Akhter said they were not allowed to buy houses/apartment in certain parts of Mumbai... it was a big story then....

U tell me if they were lying openly on indian television, it was in the days when Indian media was talking bout Raj Thackrey and its bias politics.... now for some reason all th problems are vanished in air...

Re: Muslims No Longer Allowed to Buy/Rent Property in Indian City

It will be a disaster and the majority will not benefit in the end.

Re: Muslims No Longer Allowed to Buy/Rent Property in Indian City

An eye opener for all those 'lovers of India' specially some MQM and Altaf Hussain's Mureed who used to say Partition was the biggest blunder of history.

You're right...Bombay is notorious for housing discrimnation against Muslims. However, the discrimination has up until this point been unofficial..brokers just rejecting Muslims on an individual basis. I haven't hear of any outright anti-Muslim policies up until now.

Re: Muslims No Longer Allowed to Buy/Rent Property in Indian City

The problem is - Muslims are ALL over the world but we do not have a UNITY.

We just watch the show and feel sorry. Like what's happening in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, Pakistan, India.

But I think this kind of treatment from the outsiders is GOOD. It will only UNITE all Muslims. Like 9/11 was the wake-up call for Muslims. At that time, I was not into religion... but now I take interest and I am trying to make up and learn what I could have about my religion all this time. Islam is spreading faster.

i donno about mumbai but as far as my knwldge almost real estates are controlled by muslims in many mandals in AP.

Re: Muslims No Longer Allowed to Buy/Rent Property in Indian City

the problem is muslim have unity...

strange.. I will explain. Majority (okay for sack or argument say 50%) of Hindu are vegetarian).. when muslim buys house in society he will .. on top of that cooking beef and hurting hindu sentiment (now cow is not that holy for muslims, but hypothetically consider someone cooking pork in front of you during holy month etc, just so that you can understand sentiments related to an animal)

So fade up with this neighbour want to sell his flat/house, but on one will buy Now Muslim leaving near the flat will offer the seller that he will buy the house ... for his distant relative.. and soon whole colony will be sold out ... hum 5 hamare 25...

But I can't believe someone whould have said No to Saif Ali Khan or Shabana Aazmi... NO Way.. either the seller is not willing to sell it to anyone and these people were forcing him to sell.. i can't see any other reason if property is on market and someone refuse to bollywood personalty..

if some politician wants to buy my house, I will throw him out of colony.. :P

true.. same is for UP as well..

Shabana is famous for publicity stunts.. be it 'mahila mukti' or 'narmada' etc

Muslims face a property crunch in Mumbai

** this was written last year. this is not about muslims from other nationalities not allowed to buy property for security reasons, this is about their own citizens openly facing bias because, wait a minute, they eat beef?! then stop caling yourself a DEMOCRACY!!**

New Delhi - - In the fast-paced financial hub of Mumbai, Muslims are finding it difficult to buy, rent or even sell their houses and are increasingly forced to live in ghettos.
Ghetto has come to be a word exclusively reserved for Muslims, who started facing exclusion after a Muslim underworld kingpin set off multiple bombs in Mumbai in 1993, triggering large-scale riots between Hindus and Muslims.
‘If you are looking for a house in Mumbai, never utter three words - Muslim, meat-eater, drinker,’ says Jami Ahmed. The radio station marketer, who lives in Mumbai with a Hindu friend, says he has been unable to take a house on rent because of his religion.
‘Many Muslims feel that this attitude stems from political hostility towards Pakistan. Whatever is Islamic, is from Pakistan, and whatever is from Pakistan is Islamic and thereby symbolic of Islamic fundamentalism, which is another form of terrorism,’ says Fatima Batool, a journalist still looking for a buyer for her house in Mumbai.
Even well-to-do Muslims find it tough to make headway when it comes to property.
Sophiya Chaudhary, a Muslim video jockey with music channel MTV and married to a Hindu, has been looking to buy a house for close to two years. ‘Everything goes well,’ she told newspaper Mumbai Mirror, ‘until the time I reveal my Muslim lineage.’
‘While it was a norm earlier in lower middleclass localities, the bias against Muslims is becoming common in more affluent areas too. Most Muslims live in ghettos,’ says Sandeep Sadh, CEO of the Mumbai Property Exchange.
Under laws governing the western Maharashtra state, of which Mumbai is the capital, housing societies cannot discriminate unless the building is built by a charitable trust.
A Supreme Court judgement in 2005 that upheld the right of co- operative societies to restrict membership to their community has institutionalized insularity.
The trend to live as a clan already exists, as exclusive community enclaves for Parsis (Zoroastrian), Catholics, Hindu Brahmins, and other communities, dot the city.
In August this year television actor Amir Ali, alleging discrimination, moved a local court, saying he was denied a house because he is a Muslim.
PV Kamath, an eminent property lawyer, says there are at least 15 housing societies in Mumbai, in which 10.6 per cent of the population is Muslim, seeking to amend their bylaws after the court’s judgement.
‘If things continue this way we will make a Yugoslavia out of India,’ author and rights activist Asghar Ali Engineer told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
‘After the serial blasts in Mumbai by Muslim terrorists in 2006, Muslims have no option but to look at Muslim-dominated pockets,’ real estate consultant, Yogesh Ganjawalla, says.
‘We can’t take a risk. If anything happens, both the landlord and police look for property agents,’ real estate agent Narendra told newspaper The Telegraph.
Requirements of members of minority communities also have to be taken into account, says a developer on condition of anonymity.
‘I am put off by the sight of goats and green flags (a reference to the Pakistani flag) during Eid,’ Sunil Chabra, a Hindu businessman, told the Tehelka magazine.
‘So I found a place in a Jain (conservative Hindu community) housing society, where no animal flesh or eggs are allowed to be cooked, eaten, and, as far as possible, touched.’
But living in the society left him embittered. ‘It’s hypocritical,’ he says, ‘because I have seen members of my society eating meat and swilling alcohol at restaurants outside.’
