I’ve heard that Muslims should not live in societies that are predominantly non-Muslim. Is there any injunction in Islam that discourages Muslims to live in such places?
I’m sorry I can’t provide any reference, but I have heard more than once that Muslims shouldn’t live in such countries. If I’m wrong, please correct me. My religious knowledge is not enviable, so I may not be able to argue with anyone.
Well, its kinda obvious why they shouldn't. To be a muslim you have to be distinct from the universal practices. For example Pray 5 times a day, establish a mosque you can go to etc.
So its better to go to places that offers you religious freedom...
The 'scholarly' opinion is to stay away from a land/population where you can't practise your religion and chances of turning away from religion (by assimilation, social pressure, legal pressure etc.) are higher then you should migrate to a better place (better in terms of 'religious freedom', not in terms of greener pasture).
I think it is harder to follow ur faith in the US than in , for example, Pak. But you know what, there’s plenty of people here who do not drink, do not date/sleep around, wear hijab, stay away from haram food, keep all their prayers etc.. It’s harder to do those things when ur surrounded by this culture of one night stands and the more skin u show the more chances u have of getting what you want.. In someplace like Pak, it’s sorta easier to follow some things i think.. like during Ramadan, u wudnt’ be tempted by food coz all food places are closed til iftaar (at least that’s what i remember/was told). We all struggle with faith, no matter where u live, but i just think it’s easier to follow some thigns when it’s the cultral/social norm, like covering/hijab (IMO the few ppl in Pak who dress totally american are still the exception and not the norm) .. anyway what im tryign to get at here is if someone can genuinely do these things, pushed by inner beliefs and their values, then rnt they better off than someone who just does things outta habit and coz the culture/society makes it easier?
I have neither heard nor read any such narration. On the contrary isn't it
more obvious and beneficial for Islam from dawa point of view that muslims should become more socio mingling?
Yes! muslim does need the basic requirment of 'steadfast faith' for doing so.

I don't think there's any country that follows shariah or has Islamic laws in place. If I were ever given an option I'd give preference to Canada over Pakistan. I don't see the difference between the two countries with the exception that I find practicing Islam a lot easier in Canada. On the contrary, if there was a true Islamic country with shariah as the supreme law I'd love to live there.
at the RIS conference in toronto...dr tarak s-(something....) said in his lecture that canada was the best "islamic" country...whether they knew it or not...(in terms of freedom and democracy)....he said something along those lines..those who went to the conference..please confirm....
but i was reading the quran in english...and it did mention somehting about muslims shoudl not live in a non muslim country....i will try to find the exact verse where it came from....
the evidence in islam says if you cannot live as a muslim in certain place then you should leave, and also it is correct there is no state that is islamic at this time so whole world is your oyster!
