First of all, By no means these actions are okay or justified.
but, this desperate measures are due to our own so called muslim society.
Do you know how many girls get divorced just because their sheets were not stained or whatever. How many husbands and in laws torture women solely because of this reason.
Even in Islam, it is advised not to worry about a man or woman past or question it. If you are marrying her/him then have faith in Allah. If you can't then don't marry her and once you are married have faith. You should not punish her for her sins. Leave that for the judgment day. Yet, even the most educated folks in our society judge and treat the women based on that and as a result girls take these desperate measure in hopes to avoid this. You can't pin point one thing without looking at a bigger picture.
In the end, we all own our sins and deeds and the only being to question it is the Almighty one.
