**Moscow, November 15, Interfax - The number of Muslims in Moscow increases and the Islamic infrastructure develops, Nezavisimaya gazeta daily writes Tuesday.
‘Muslimization of Moscow grows. Muslim Moscow at present is not made by mosques alone. It also includes Muslim shops, restaurants, maternity clinics, dentists, beauty shops, employment agencies and undertaker’s offices, firms of attorneys, charities, publishing houses, law enforcement organizations’, the edition notes.**
‘The Muslim community in the capital city increased considerably after perestroika and continues to develop rapidly’, the paper asserts. ‘However, nobody in Moscow knows its number’.
The only chance to get a realistic picture was missed in 2002 during the regular census. ‘The question of religious belief was not included in questionnaires, though religious leaders as well as many state and public figures insisted on it’, city administration official explained.
‘According to various estimations, there are from 2% to 6% of deeply religious people both among Muslims and Orthodox’, chief of the Caucasus Department of the Institute for Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergei Arutyunov said.
The scientist believes that religious component plays an important part in self-identification: ‘Islam is not only a religion, it is a certain way of life. It is not necessary for one to be a mosque goer or read Mohammedan prayer with five ablutions as it is unreal in megapolis, but one will observe rules of fasting, norms of etiquette and behavior. This is precisely what lays a foundation for awareness of one’s identity.
