Muslim Students: How American should they be?

Re: Muslim Students: How American should they be?

I hated our MSA just because they were so damn inactive :smack: There was like one guy and a buncha girls and all the girls had sooo many issues with each other!
And I also have a huge issue with the segregation crap! It’s total nonsense. Living in America, you have to deal with the opposite sex almost all the time. Then why not in the MSA? It’s ridiculous how they thing that not letting muslim men and women come face to face and talk. Or why can’t the ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ have activities together? What is the harm in having muslim men and women together in a social setting? Why do they think that only something bad can come out of it? Would they rather have the muslim boys hanging out with non-muslim girls and muslims girls hanging out with non-muslim boys?

Re: Muslim Students: How American should they be?

what kind of fun are you talking about? fun is haraam in islam.

Re: Muslim Students: How American should they be?

I’m sure you could be forgiven for assuming all arabs are muslims. A very large population of arabs are christians and a few of them jewish.

Re: Muslim Students: How American should they be?

I went to a small liberal arts college, and when I got there, there was no organization focused on the needs of Muslim students or raising awareness of Islam. During the end of my 1st year I worked with with a couple other students to found an organization that did just that called "Noor." We were not affiliated with the national MSA, but it's a similar idea. After the first year it was run by women (me and another student). The Muslim student body was small at the school, so we had a few small social gatherings, particularly during Ramadan, and then larger events, dinners to celebrate holidays, panel discussions, etc, and though those were there to support the Muslim students, the large portion of the attendees were not Muslims, and the events functioned largely to raise awareness.

The school community is highly intellectual and liberal, so there wasn't the same kind of judgment. We were there to support each other, socialize, enjoy ourselves, and learn something along the way. It was a lot of work, but worth it.
