Re: Muslim prayers in Greek are distrupted by mobs

if i can recall the trend right, someone will show up and say that muslims in greece have no room to talk because non muslims in saudi arabia cant build their houses of worship.

and as we all know, a muslim immigrant construction worker from bangladesh living in greece is the guy who has made and enforced saudi laws since that country was founded.

Nuff said.

Re: Muslim prayers in Greek are distrupted by mobs

ATHENS: Dozens of far-right activists and local residents threw eggs and taunted hundreds of Muslim immigrants as they gathered to pray in a central square for Eidul Azha surrounded by a protective cordon of riot police.
Greece, which has become the main immigrant gateway to the European Union, has a growing Muslim community and tensions between locals and incomers have run high in some Athens areas such as Attiki square, the scene of Tuesday’s incident.
Athens’ Muslim community is without an official mosque and prayers are usually held at cultural centres or community halls or private apartments around the city. The Muslim community in Greece is estimated at about 1 million, in a country where most people are Greek Orthodox Christians.
While the Muslims prayed, some locals shouted obscenities from their balconies and waved Greek flags. Leaflets that depicted pigs were scattered across the square.
“There is a (unofficial) mosque near here but we’re afraid to go there,” said a 30-year old migrant from Bangladesh, who gave his name as Shamsul. “Sometimes Greeks in the neighbourhood threaten to kill us.”
Margarita Vassilatou, 56, who has lived in the square for more than 35 years, said she wanted to leave as a result of the immigrants.
In another, more central square in front of Athens university, about 2,000 Muslim men and women prayed peacefully in front of the neo-classical university and ancient Greek statues. –Reuters

it was only in one location and nobody got seriously hurt. it says in the last sentence that in other locations the prayers went peacefully in Greece.

i wonder what the cause of the growing tensions are though, in regards to the part in red.

Re: Muslim prayers in Greek are distrupted by mobs

^ Immigration.... The loss of employment oppurtunities..... so added tensions..

Re: Muslim prayers in Greek are distrupted by mobs

is this an assumption or do you have past articles to back this up?

immigration and loss of employment opportunities to immigrants have happened in massive amounts in the US/UK and i'm sure in other european countries with outsourcing happening. i don't see such racist/prejudiced mobs and ones that are allowed to make death threats so a person is afraid to go to their place of worship

plus greece isn't exactly a developing country where a big portion of it's population is illiterate so there's no excuse for such behavior against immigrants.

Re: Muslim prayers in Greek are distrupted by mobs

Nisha ,to understand the matter, you got to know that Greek is having a very worst financial crisis. When the people are really frustrated and do not have a clue to how they can get out of this quagmire, they will resort to such methods.Besides you can not compare Greek with other countries like USA or UK .

Its like National Socialists accused Jews fo Germany's plight or B.N.P in Britain accusing Asians for all other issues.

Its Sad :(
