muslim philosophers....

i think allama iqbal was considered a philosopher…

do we have any muslim after him who is actually considered a philosopher???

hmm....aaj kal har gali har nukkar pe aik philosopher khara hae :D

we dont need philosophers anymore, the Muslim world needs activisits

I would consider Ayaz Amir to be the one. His domain is current affairs and politics though. Thats in prose while we have lots of Philosophers expressing their vision in poetry as well.

Faiz was a philosopher-poet-activist.

Allama Iqbal -i think- was a great philosopher, and what i really like in his poetry and wisdom is the influence of his partly western education. He did his PhD in Germany (?), and I think that was a great step of his. This way he had a good view of two different worlds and it allowed him to gain a good overview.

irem: without philosophers activists won't know what to activate for ;)

but when we have the Quraan already, we dont need any more guidance

we need political leaders to organise and direct efforts of activists as a movement...but not philosophy of philosophers

by that token: when we have the Quraan already, we dont need any political leaders either ;-) we only need the Quraan to lead us

iqbal's philosophy is more shown in his essays grouped under "reconstruction of religios thoughts in islam" than his poetry....
although his poetry (especially his works other than baang-e-daraa) also carry a philosophical touch....

iram, i thin philosophers dont present something new, just rennovate the ideology....
more of like what a mujaddid wud do....

Can Sufis etc be considered as philosophers, like Bhule Shah and Bahu etc?

yes sufis r the most philosophical people i think....
have u never read ibn-al-arabi????
i have a translation of his work "self discovery of god"....
read that and tell me why u dont think its philosophy....

and read this form bulhay shah:
main be-qaid aan, main be-qaid, na rogi na vayd
na main momin na main kafir, na sayyad na sayd
kharabaat me jaal asaaDi, na shobhaa na ayb
bulhay shah di zaat pucchnayein, na payda na payd

I got this book last time in pak, it's called 'Three Muslim Sages'
Avicenna, Suhrawardi, Ibn 'Arabi. By Seyyed Hossein Nasr.
If you read through it, it will give you heaps of names of muslim philosophers. Inshalah will post some of them later..

This is what it says about Avicenna..

Avicenna (Ibn Sina) was a Muslim Philosopher and Scientist.

'His philosophical works include Peripatetic masterpiece al-shifa (The book of the Remedy), the Latin Sufficentia, which is the longest encyclopedia of knowledge ever wriiten by one man, his Najat (The book of Deliverance), which is a summary of Shifa, 'Uyun al hikmah (Fountains of Wisdom), and his last and perhaps greatest masterpiece al-Ishrarat wa'l-tanbihat (The book of Directives and Remarks).
In addition he wrote a large number of treatises on logic, pyschology, cosmology, and metaphysics.
There are also the the "esoteric" works pertaining to his "Oriental Philosophy" of which the Risalah fi'l-ishq (Treatise on Love, the Trilogy Hayy ibn Yaqzan (The Living Son of the Awake), Risalat al-tair (Treatise of the Bird) and Salaman wa Absal, the last three chapters of the Isharat, and Mantiq al-mashriqiyin (The Logicc of the Orientals), which is a part of a larger work now lost, are the most important.'

Army, you communication skills are really weird, I asked a question, as you had only mentioned Iqbal as Muslim philosopher. I read Bhulle shah on and off, hence the question about his status :)

^
baji, i asked for muslim philosophers AFTER iqbal (before him examples r a many) and i did not think, even for a minute, that bulhay shah came after iqbal....
did he????

Oh I didn't read 'After' in the sentence, sorry. Let me google :o

Agreed, Faiz expressed some amazingly profound thoughts in his shayari.
