Muslim Personalities In Media

It disappoints me to see so few muslim personalities in the media who present a positive image of Islam and muslims. I have seen Irshad Manji quite a few times on Bill Maher’s show and she is one obsequious attention-seeker.

Last night, Reza Aslan (author of * No God But God*) appeared on Bill Maher’s show. This guy was very articualte, intelligent, and funny. He made some excellent point regarding the Afghan convert situation in Afghan and Iraq. I was impressed.

You know of any other personalities in the UK/US/Eur media ? Please don’t mention tools like Fouad Ajami. Thanks.

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

There are a few but Im not sure everyone here would call them "Muslim"

a few news readers, a comedian chap who may be Muslim called Ovid something or other

and there was another Pak female comedienne who used to wear a headscarf but I dont think she does now

Yasmin alibhai Brown... journelist and commentater

and a chap from Morrocco (i believe) who got to the top ten on the X factor show

anyway... He used to be a male exotic dancer... he danced to make money to send his grandma and grandpa on Umra

Bless him!

there are others.. but I forget

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

Shazia Mirza?

I have heard Yasmin Alibhai Brown on BBC.

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

Another media personality that I like is Fareed Zakaria who is the author of *Future of Freedom: Illiberal Democracy at Home and Abroad. *

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

Does a Muslim "personality" in the media have to announce that they are Muslim? Do they have to talk about Islam and take a stance either way on things related to Islam?

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

No explicit announcements, affinity is sufficient. I haven't heard Reza Aslan or Fareed Zakaria makes those declarations on nightly news.

Not execlusively. Fareed Zakaria is a wine critic on Slate.com.

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

musharraf, with his own brand new enlightened version of Islam....

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

Anyone heard Imam Hamza Yusuf speak? Is he ever invited to tele shows etc?

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

Hamza Yusuf is an incredibly intelligent and well-read Muslim scholar that could definitely answer questions posed by alot of western TV personalities (it seems there are no journalists now, there are only celebrities that present news).

I wish we would see alot more of him, but at the same time, the burden of representing the entirety of Islam to Americans should not fall squarely on him, which is why I think he doesn't participate in the media extravaganza as much as he can.

Zaytuna Institute is a true blessing for American Muslims.

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

Hamza Yusuf is the Tom Jones of the Muslim Student lecture circuit

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

This is true. He spends more time investing his knowledge in young Muslims rather than answering challenges posed by non-Muslims. I think this is the better investment in the long run.

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

The people you want t hear speak are the ones people like lazy daizy et al would never wish to discuss. Espisito. Lapidius, Sells. White rich americans of different religions, very popular until the media went nazi propganda.

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

So, basically they just ought to project what is good about Islam according to what is acceptable by the Kaffirs and Mushrikeens...They themselves don't have to be Muslims, like you say, Fareed Zakaria is a wine expert on slate.com...

Well, then Karen Armstrong certainly tops the list as Muslims who portray Islam in a good light...And to top it off, she is more learned and proficient in matters relating to Islam...

Re: Muslim Personalities In Media

Dearest Grumpy.. you have confused and confuddled me... I will however say that believe me, I dont want to hear or listen to ANY of them including your list

I was just trying to be helpful to that delightful Luxury Item chap

I was invited to an Islamic lecture and guest speakers were

Yvonne Ridley... (does she edit or do something on a certain Islamic channel?)
and Mohammed Ali... the boxer
