muslim naming conventions

one of my colleagues is expecting a baby like any day now. They have been sorting the naming business out. There are a few things I heard that I was not too sure about

  1. finding name from Quran.. how does this work, does one randonly open a page and look at 7th word in the 9th line or something? what if the words that come up are ibless, firaun, abu lahab, shaitaan

  2. he told me that they look at numbers as well. isn’t this numerology thing for names not an islamic thing

I thought i would ehck here and see what this is, and what is the standing of it.

Thanks

i dont know man..my parents screwed up when they were namin their children..i mean what kinda name is sheraz
khair whats done is done..i m gonna name them after you know who

inshallah thats if i have some :)

gracias mon ami, and what about this numbering business. I had never heard of it before in muslim naming conventions. I know that there are numbers assigned to each letter and then they are added up, but that is kinda all I know

I am sure different people do it different ways... but what I was once told by a friend (on how he named his son), was that the patriach of the family (grand father) opened the Quran randomly, and which ever page it opened, they got the first alphabet and then selected an appropriate name from that alphabet. So, the alphabet in the Quran was "hay", so they named the son, Haseeb. I don't think they'd be able to use a full word randomly, cz Quran is not a book of names, per se.

Even the method I just described, sounds weird and is probably how som people think they are being divinely guided. Although, the responsibility of the father is to give a good name to the children, and not necessarily flip the pages of Quran to get the starting alphabet.

:hehe: at some of the replies.

Guys… kuch khuda ka khauf karro! :grumpy:

i am sure all of us know many names by heart then why shud we refer to books????

the best names according to the prophet (saw) are: abdullah and abdul rehman

for girls, i prefer what the prophet (saw) chose for his daughters....
or other names like maryam, ayesha, hafsa r also good....

its also better if he request the grand parents of the newborn baby. 2nd father or mother an consult the new born baby aunts and uncles 3rd as armughal is telling buy a Muslim names book from the market.

Inuit thanks mon, I am not going to give him advise on how he should name his kids, that shis business. I just wanted more info on the search of names from quran.

I still have not heard much about the "numers" with the names dealio, what exactly is that.

My own plan is simple, when i have kids, I get to pick teh first name, grand parents can pick the middle name, all is well and done. not going thru any random book openings or what nots.

Just advise them to pick one that all friends and relatives of the future child are able to spell......:)

Ahem...

I am not giving anyone advise. Their kid, their business

I was justa skign questions form gupsters to see whatthey know about these things

It should contain maximum 2 worlds Like

Muhammad Ali
Umar Maqsood
Faheem Ahmad
Syed Ibrahim

Not 3 or more words like

Syed Muhammad Ali Shah
Malik Mukhtar Ahmed Soharvardi
Sheikh Jannisar Ali

Reason

(1) Computer data entry is easy
(2) No confusion in first and last names. Especially in western countries.

Inuit

I have a middle name, that has caused no problem. of course i dont use the prefix of syed or shah and suffix of naqvi etc so my name is my name and not a declaration of syedness or tribe or what nots :)

so if you family name is zaidi

a name like siraj hassan zaidi will be fine, however if you go with syed siraj hassan zaidi, now u have a problem cuz syed is not your first name.

i know a family where the names are

Mohammad abdul ur rehman
Mohammad atta ur rehman
mohammad altaf ur rehman

so everyone is M.A Rehman. it was comical to see when they got a call from anyone, even when they were looking for jobs, someone calls," can i talk to "Mohammad rehman" and then a few questions to figure out which mohammad rehman. they got pulled over for driving, the car is in one guy's name but the other guys is driving it.. takes teh cop ages to figure out who is who and what is what. finally the smartened up and started using M. atta ue rehman, M. abdul rehman to make it easier on themsleves and the world.

same happens with all syed name name zaidi, or syed name name naqvi, people ask for syed zaidi and then its a whole dicussion to figure out who.

I used a book called Arabic/Islamic names to select names for my daughters. As you know I had to look for three at one time, it was a long process...a lot of back and forth between me, wify and ammi and abbu. I used the book listed above, Quran and urdu dictionary to come up with the names.
