Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

What is the prescribed dress code for muslim men taking part in sports and atheletic events? isnt the male awrah from the navel to the knees? are there any fatwas on this targetting any muslim men recently?

the only incident i know of is when the taliban shaved the entire pakistani football team’s heads once to teach them islam, and the people of the islamic republic of pakistan were quite furious.

there are a lot more muslim men out there on television running around with their awrah bare, than muslim women. yet the fatwahs all seem to be directed at the women. and funnily enough, even the muslim women seem all keen on dissing the girls. can anyone explain?

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

no actually we do diss men as well. we all know what they are doing is wrong islamically. we are just waiting for proper mullani to come forward n declare that fatwa. but there arent enough female mullanis out there who would dare to do so or else, we are ready to support her as well.

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

queer, you're jumping the guns. Muslim men also have a dresscode, which they must abide by. There are plenty of fatawa out there on it. I'll try to get hold of one which spells out the Islamic dresscode for men.

As for men watching inappropriateness on T.V, there are rulings against it already. As I mentioned in another thread, the Muslim scholar should've approached the lady in person rather than blasting her off in the media.

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

queer, didn’t you hear about the mullah who set a new world record 200 m back stroke wearing shalwar kameez? :hehe:

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

sadiyah, i am reasonably aware of a dress code being prescribed. however, every single muslim country's soccer team - turkey to saudi arabia - wears clothes that dont fit this. and these are national teams, representing teh country.

the same is true for atheletes - from said aoita(i have personally had the misfortune of seeing his balls on TV) to papoo pehelwan (actual name) - wear clothes that do not conform to the islamic standard.

anyhow, i look forward to your references to fatwas in this regard.

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

:rotfl: thank you! I needed that laugh…hahahahahahah!

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

queer, no one is denying the hypocricy that exist in muslim world, it still doesnt make it right or correct according to islam.

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

^ but Sadiyah - this was said by a person based on what he thought is right and wrong. Neither Allah nor any God said 'trousers' are inappropriate. How is this different from quoting the fatwa against Sania's tennis attire as the proof for itself?

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

Sadiyah, thanks for the posts on what the dress code is for men. do you know why none of the muslims atheletes and sportsmen seem to follow it? and why dont we see public condemnation of these people?

As obvious, there is plenty of evidence regarding the dresscode for men and women. Most of us are aware of it, but how much or little we follow is something we would have to answer for to Allah (SWT).

Furthermore, both men and women in Islam have been asked to lower their gaze and not look at that which is wrong and inappropriate. Therefore, same would go for T.V or watching sports where men and women may not be covered up appropriately.

As for the scholars targetting Muslim women and not men, that is something one would have to ask them. I’m not quite of the view that such fatawa should be dished out towards a specific individual in the media. The purpose should be to remind and to advise and not to publicly humiliate and put down an individual.

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

funny jammies, the Sunni scholars usually deduce their ruling from both Quran and Hadiths. Therefore, there are specifics mentioned as to how much one should cover (or uncover) oneself while in public.

queer, I cannot answer on behalf of others. As the fatawa indicate, the rules are quite clear and do not cause much confusion when one wishes to follow them. Again, it is up to the individuals as to how much they wish to adhere or neglect the Islamic dresscode.

You have raised a valid point regarding the public condemnation for sportsmen. I'm not sure whether it's been done or not in the past. To be fair and equal, if they could come out with such fatawa against a female in the media, then they should do it for men as well who do not adhere to the dresscode.

hear hear!

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

^ amen

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

everyone knows its wrong....
there is no need to issue a fatwa naming a certina indiviual or team....
and it was stupid of the guy who issued a fatwa against sania....
there r many muslim girls in the media (india, pakistan, arab and other places too) who wear dress far worse than what sania wears....
the need for a fatwa shud arise only if sania wears that dress and declares it acceptable in Islam, and hence a fatwa is needed to counter the misunderstanding that may arise due to such statements from a person who is popular in the media....

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

on a side note…i want to know Sheikh AaWaT’s view on pictures/images…

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

Interesting post, one of the few that havnt devolved into mindless squabble but rather has everyone discussing in a very proper way.

Yes men also have a very clear cut defined dress code and should adhere to it. Yes the fatwa's are more or less needless as the rulings for dress code are very openly defined in islam and dont leave much room for interpretation.

And yes, the men and women running around in shorts and what not need to be condemned for their lack of adhering to proper islamic attire.

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

Queer, actually the people of Pakistan were not furious when their heads were shaven, they (the team) was actually laughed upon, and mocked by the media and the people, quite sad, but true.

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

Its very easy to issue a fatwa for a woman. But i have never heard a fatwa for these men playing sports wearing shorts and banyan.
Why isn’t there a uproar against soccer or hockey team.

Re: Muslim men in sports: Dress code.

Prince Naseem use to wear ridiculously long shorts which covered his awra and so does Amir Khan (except for that one in his underwear where he’s weighing himself  ).
