is there a Muslim identity that people who attribute Islam as their faith, to themselves, are aware of and are comfortable with?
what are the criteria for being able to have that Muslim Identity?
share?

Re: Muslim Identity : is there one?
yeah...there is one and a very very confused one as well...its called UICI [Universal Islamic Confused Identity]...
Re: Muslim Identity : is there one?
Muslim identity... I don't know about the criteria, never thought about it. Hijab, greeting with salam, or starting something with bismillah can be few pointers, I am not sure if they should be considered as criteria....
Re: Muslim Identity : is there one?
Good question really. What would distinguish us primarily here in the west would be the fact that we don't drink, eat pork and prefer celibacy. Honesty, piety and other such attributes can be found amongst other people too.
Re: Muslim Identity : is there one?
Salaat.
A muslim identity would mean your life would be more influenced by islam than say western culture, pakistani culture, desi culture, street culture, ethnic culture.
Most people but more so Muslims and other Desis are influenced by different ideologies for what I suppose one could call their different roles in the countriesd they settled in.
You will see a lot of young south asian boys listen to rap and use afro-american street language. They are into smoking weed, big cars, dating, eating kebab rolls and gangs. None of these are really islamic or desi things.
Then you get people who like their bhangra, speak their urdu and punjabi with mates, wear shalwar kameez regularly..more desi/etnic culture influenced...
then you get those young south asian muslims who dont like wearing shalwar kameez but wear a Juba, prefer to wear hijabs, address one another as brother/sister, attend islamic conferences as social activities...they do a lot more but thats my basic view of what a person who has a muslim identity as opposed to others would be like....also their daily routine is governed by Namaz/Saalat....as opposed to what time eastenders is on etc...
