Music is Haram

Assalam O Alaikum

Surah Luqman - Ayat 6
Wa minan nasi ma’een … lahwal hadith.

And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e.music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allâh without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allâh, the Verses of the Qur’ân) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire)

Hazrat Abdulla bin Mas’ud has swear that the meaning of “lahwal hadith” is singing and instruments of music.

Prophet SAW said

Layakununna min ummati aqwamun … walkhamr walma’azif.

There will be people born in my ummah who will make zina, silk (resham), alcohol and singing / music Halal.

The exact urdu translation is
“Meri ummat main aisay log paida hongay jo zina, resham, sharab aur ganay bajanay ko halal banalain gaay”

From the above two, its clear that there is hurmat of Music / Singing in Islam. The only thing allowed is that during marriages women (only women and not men) can use daf (an instrument) and sing (but the words and kalam should be good, i.e. not shirkia kalam or laghu kalam.

I have taken the above from a book FATAWA, by Sheikh Abdul Aziz Bin Abdulla Bin Baaz, the Mufti of Saudi Arabia and the Head of Dar-ul-Afta.

May Allah SWT keep us far away from Music / Singing and what ever He dislikes (Ameen).
